QUESTIONS!

TEXT 1. THE FOLLOWING TEXT IS FOR QUESTIONS 1 TO 4.

Marijuana is a dry, shredded green/ brown mix of flowers, stems, seeds, and leaves of the hemp
plant, Cannabis sativa. It usually is smoked as a cigarette or in a pipe. Marijuana smoke has a strong
and distinctive , usually sweet-and sour odor. There are countless street terms for marijuana including
pot, herb, weed , grass, widow, ganja and hash.
Long-term marijuana use leads to an addiction. The short-term effects of marijuana addiction
can include problems with memory and learning, difficulty in thinking and problem solving, loss of
coordination and increase heart rate. Smoking marijuana increases possibility of developing cancer of
head or neck. Marijuana use also has the potential to promote cancer of the lungs and other parts of the
respiratory treat because it contains irritants and carcinogens. In fact, marijuana smoke contains 50 to
70 per cent more carcinogenic hydrocarbons than does tobacco smoke. Depression, anxiety and
personality disturbances have been associated with marijuana addiction. Students who smoke
marijuana get lower grades and are less likely to graduate from high school, compared with their non –
smoking friends.

TEXT 2. The following text is for questions 5 to 9

A landslide is a kind of natural disasters which often happens in Indonesia. It has become a
serious problem because of the following reasons.
First, landslides cause property damage, injury and death, and adversely affect a variety of
resources such as water supplies, fisheries, sewage disposal systems, forests, dams and roadways. Such
resources can be affected for years after a slide event.
Second, the negative economic effects of landslides include the cost to repair structures, loss of
property value, disruption of transportation routes, medical costs in the event of injury and direct costs
such lost timber and lost fish stocks. Water availability, quantity and quality can be affected by
landslides. Geotechnical studies and engineering projects to asses and stabilize potentially dangerous
sites can be costly.
As a natural happening, landslides are difficult to overcome. However, we can do the following
to prevent landslides or minimize the landslides hazards.
 Identify where potential landslides can occur. This can be done by examining the geological
conditions that contribute to mass wasting as well as taking aerial photographs to identify the
previous slides.
 After a landslide-prone area is identified, the next step is to minimize the damage. This can be
done using engineering techniques regarding drainage control, unstable slope materials, vegetation
and shoreline.

5. What is the purpose of the text ?

A. To tell past events.
B. to persuade the readers that something is the case or not the case
C. To entertain the readers.
D. To tell how to do something through a sequence of steps.
E. To tell newsworthy events.

6. Which of the following is NOT the effect of landslides ?

A. Injury and death D. Loss of property value.
B. Property damage. E. Disruption of transportation routes.
C. Plenty of fish stocks

7. How can we identify previous landslides ?

A. By taking aerial photographs. D. By stabilizing unstable slope materials.
B. By stabilizing dangerous sites. E. By assessing potential dangerous sites.
C. By examining the geological conditions.

8. “ . . . and stabilize potentially dangerous sites can be costly .” (Paragraph 3)

The word ‘costly’ means . . . .
A. a. expensive B. cheap C. easy D. difficult E. valuable

TEXT 3. The following text is for questions 9 to 12.

Recycling is a collection, processing, and reuse of materials that would otherwise be thrown
away. Materials ranging from precious metals to broken glass, from old newspapers to plastic spoons,
can be recycled. The recycling process reclaims the original material and uses it in new products.
In general, using recycled materials to make new products costs less and requires less energy
than using new materials. Recycling can also reduce pollution, either by reducing the demand for high-
pollution alternatives or by minimizing the amount of pollution produced during the manufacturing
process.
Paper products that can be recycled include cardboard containers, wrapping paper, and office
paper. The most commonly recycled paper product is newsprint. In newspaper recycling, old
newspapers are collected and searched for contaminants such as plastic bags and aluminum foil. The
paper goes to a processing plant where it is mixed with hot water and turned into pulp in a machine that
works much like a big kitchen blender. The pulp is screened and filtered to remove smaller
contaminants. The pulp then goes to a large vat where the ink separates from the paper fibers and fl
oats to the surface. The ink is skimmed off, dried and reused as ink or burned as boiler fuel. The
cleaned pulp is mixed with new wood fi bers to be made into paper again.
Experts estimate the average office worker generates about 5 kg of wastepaper per month.
Every ton of paper that is recycled saves about 1.4 cu m (about 50 cu ft) of land fill space. One ton of
recycled paper saves 17 pulpwood trees (trees used to produce paper).

9. The following things can be recycled, EXCEPT....

A. precious metals D. broken glass
B. old newspapers E. plastic spoons
C. fresh vegetables and fruits

10. Which of the following is NOT the benefit of recycling?

A. It costs much money for the process of recycling D. It costs less to make new products.
B. It requires less energy. E. It can reduce pollution.
C. It reduces the demand for high-pollution alternatives

11. What is the third step of recycling paper products?

A. Collect and search for contaminants such as plastic bags and aluminium foil.
B. Mix the paper with hot water in a blender which turns it into pulp.
C. Screen and filter the pulp to remove smaller contaminants.
D. Put the pulp to a large vat to separate the ink from the paper fibers.
E. Mix the pulp with new wood fibers to be made into paper again.

12. We can make use of the ink after being separated from the paper fibers by doing the followings,
EXCEPT....
A. Skim it off. D. Dry it.

TEXT 4.The following text is for questions 13 to 15.

By experimenting with combinations of chemicals, manuscripts have produced a wide variety

of effective dusts and sprays to control plant pests. Some, such as those containing pyrethrum, work
well and do not harm to people, pets, and birds. There are others that contain stronger chemicals such
as DDT, melathion, diazinon, and chlorine. These can be extremely dangerous if they are not properly
used.

The first thing to do in dealing with plant pests is to seek the proper advice. Trained salesmen
at garden stores can supply valuable information on the correct product to use. If the problem is a
complicated or stubborn one, additional advice should be obtained from government agriculture
department offices.

13. How can manufacturers get various effective pesticides ?

B. ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS BASED ON THE TEXT CORRECTLY!

How the Water Cycle Works

Solar energy evaporates exposed water from seas, lakes, rivers, and wet soil; the majority of this
evaporation takes place over the seas. Water released into the atmosphere by the plants through
photosynthesis. During this process, known as evapotranspiration, water vapor rises into the
atmosphere.
Clouds form when air become with water vapor. The two major types of cloud formation are
stratified or layered grey clouds called stratus and billowing white or dark grey cloud called cumulus
clouds.

Precipitation as rain , or hail ensures that water returns to earth’s surface in a fresh form. Some
of this rain, however, falls into the seas and is not accessible to humans. When rain falls, it either
washes down hill slopes or seeps underground; when snow and hail melts, this water may also sink into
the ground.

Rain fall also replenishes river water supplies, as does underground water. Snow fall may
consolidate into glaciers and ice sheets which, when they melt, release their water into the
ground, into stream or into the seas.
16. Why does the majority of evaporation take place over seas?

 The majority of evaporation takes place overseas because the surface of the sea gets more solar
energy

17. How do clouds form?

 Clouds form when air becomes saturated with water vapor

18. How many major types of cloud formation are there?

 They are two major types.

19. What types of clouds are associated with rainy weather?

 Nimbostratus clouds and cumulonimbus clouds are the two cloud types that are associated with
rainy weather.

20. What makes certain that water returns to Earth’s surface in a fresh form?

 Nimbostratus clouds will bring continuous rain
