This enclosure contains information on special parts of the machine. Each Enclosure must be
consulted along with the document to which it refers, to ensure that important information is not
overlooked.
:DUQLQJVLJQV
Paragraphs that should not be overlooked are highlighted and preceded by the symbols described
and illustrated below.
DANGER
Paragraphs marked with this symbol indicate an imminent danger, and the contents must
therefore be taken into careful account in order to prevent a serious accident.
CAUTION
Paragraphs marked with this symbol indicate procedures to be used and actions to be
taken to avoid any damage to goods and property.
INFORMATION
This symbol is used to indicate points of particular importance that must not be overlooked.
:DUQLQJV
The safety information provided in the User’s and Maintenance Manual must be read before using
the machine.
This chapter provides all the information essential for proper use of the Rietschle VTB 250 vacuum
pump. The following figure illustrates the vacuum pump and allows the parts mentioned in the
instructions to be identified.

CAUTION
Start the pump for the first time without connecting the suction pipe. Should the pump start
to turn the wrong way with the pipe connected, this would create a counter-pressure that
might damage or even break the blades.
CAUTION
Do not turn on and off unnecessarily; this may damage the vacuum pump blades.
CAUTION
Do not tamper with valve A (see figure on page 1 - 1). Adjustment of the vacuum cannot be
carried out on the pump.

To carry out operations on the vacuum pump, for example maintenance of filters or blades, the
vacuum in the system must first be eliminated (the gauge indicating the pressure in the system
must show 0). Should it be necessary to discharge any residual vacuum, proceed as follows.
1. Run a program of any kind (all the procedures are described in the Software user’s manual).
2. Select an origin.
A
3. Press the piece locking pedal.

Frequency of operation: every 6000 hours (60 Hz), every 4500 hours (50 Hz).(*)
1. Fill the pump provided with ESSO UNIREX N3 lubricant, or with the lubricant indicated on
plate M.
2. Insert the pump into the greasing nipple and pump in 8 grams of lubricant (approximately 3
strokes of the pump). Carry out this operation on both the greasing nipples L.
&OHDQLQJILOWHUV
CAUTION
Inadequate filter maintenance will decrease the pump’s performance.
The pump is equipped with standard filters and a supplementary filter. To clean the various filters,
follow the procedures described below. Before proceeding, check the vacuum pump pressure
gauge to see whether there is any residual vacuum in the system, and discharge it if necessary
(see “Discharging residual vacuum” on page 1 - 2).
(*). Maintenance intervals are valid for a pump operating at a room temperature of not more than 20
°C. At 40 °C these intervals must be halved.

1. Unfasten screws g.
3. Take out the cartridges f of filter S and clean them. These cartridges should be replaced once
a year.

1. Remove cover K.

Frequency of operation: first check after 2000 hours, then every 500 hours.
The blades, which rub continually on the inside of the casing, are subject to wear. Check the width
of the blades, and replace them when they reach a minimum of 52 mm. Before proceeding, check
the vacuum pump pressure gauge to see whether there is any residual vacuum in the system, and
discharge it if necessary (see “Discharging residual vacuum” on page 1 - 2).
CAUTION
Always replace the whole set of blades at the same time.
2. Unfasten screws s.
3. Unfasten screw a and insert one of the screws s into the same hole. This operation enables
cover b to be removed slowly.
4. Take out the blades d and check them. None of the blades must exceed the minimum limit
indicated above.
5. Arrange the blades in the rotor slots, making sure that the chamfer Y faces outwards and
coincides with the direction of movement O1 and with the bore of casing Z.

O1
6. Before fitting cover b back onto the end of the shaft, spread ESSO UNIREX N3 grease, or the
type of grease indicated on plate M (see figure on page 1 - 1) in the bearing retainer. It is also
necessary to remove any residual grease from the shaft, as this will penetrate into the pump,
mixing with the residual blade dust to form a pasty layer that might case the blades to become
blocked in the rotor slots.
CAUTION
Do not allow impurities to penetrate the bearing.
7. Replace cover b. The cover lock screws must be tightened gradually and simultaneously, so
that the cover does not tilt on the pins. While tightening the screws, it is also recommended
that you turn the fan (using a screwdriver or similar tool) to check that the blades are moving
freely in the rotor slots.
8. Replace cap e.

Wear in the rubber joints (k) will vary according to the conditions in which the pump is used, so that
these joints should be checked periodically. Worn joints will result in a loud metallic noise being
heard when the pump is started. Before proceeding, check the vacuum pump pressure gauge to
see whether there is any residual vacuum in the system, and discharge it if necessary (see
“Discharging residual vacuum” on page 1 - 2).
CAUTION
Faulty rubber joints may result in breakage of the rotor shaft.
1. Unfasten screws (S5) and also the screw on the foot (S6).
2. Remove the motor in an axial direction, along with the semi-joint (q).
3. If the rubber joints (k) are damaged, remove the safety rings (l) from the joint pin and replace
them. Do not remove the spacer ring (p). Also check the joint pins and replace them if
necessary, proceeding as follows.
5. Remove the joint with the fan (v) from the pump shaft.
6. Unfasten the nuts (w) with the washers (u) and replace the pins.
