Connecting the chord notes – Autumn leaves

Lesson objectives To learn how to connect the chord notes in a musical

(linear) way.
Activity 1 Play through the chord notes (quarter beats or crotchets) for
the chord changes to Autumn leaves. Remember to ALWAYS
improvise your own versions too! Recap!
Activity 2 Connect the chord notes in a linear fashion (it's also on the
screen in the video).
Activity 3 Connect the 3rd (1st beat of the bar) to a chord note on beat 3
Remember, you can also try this starting on the 1st of each
chord or the 5th too!
Activity 4 Connect the chord notes using quavers or 8 th notes!
This is an exercise called 'running the scale'. But hear, we
have given ourselves an objective of always playing a chord
note on beats 1 & 3.

How to make great progress!

1. Don't try to run before you can walk.

2. Whilst making mistakes is a part of everyday life, if you continue to
make the same mistakes in music, guess what? You get really good at
making those mistakes!
3. For tricky passages, make sure you slow right down and practice
intently without any backing tracks!
4. REMEMBER – as we use Autumn leaves more and more (for the next
few lessons) you will hopefully find that you are starting to internalise
the changes.
What does that mean? You don't need to think as much and you are
starting to hear!
5. If you can, try to also play the exercises (when improvising) without the
music. It is here, you want to try and not think but listen!
