Vibration Analysis & Troubleshooting

Loose Rotor
Vibration analysis is a technology used to pinpoint
defects and/or forcing frequencies in rotating
equipment. Such things as unbalance,
misalignment, structural defects, and gear and
bearing wear are some of the common problems.

Laser alignments & On-site rotor balancing

7.50" 6.50" 10.50"

Using laser alignment equipment allows for 6.00"

precision alignments to be performed in half the

time of conventional methods with more accuracy.
Balancing of any type of rotating equipment ensures
reliability, increased uptime, and optimal 0.0 / 1" 1.0 0.7 0.4

performance. 0.1 / 1" 3.5 1.7 0.2

Acceptance Testing (Commissioning)

New or recently rebuilt equipment are ideal candidates for

implementing and verifying Vibration, Alignment, and/or
Balance standards. By using 3 r d party consulting to test
these equipment it ensures non-biased condition analysis.
This all to be done before the OEM warranty expires.

Dynamic Growth Studies

A dynamic growth study takes a precision laser alignment one
step further. Does the alignment hold true once the machine
is at operating temperature and with the introduction of
dynamic force. For most equipment it is satisfactory. Certain
highly critical machines will require off line to running an
OL2R alignment. This ensures thermal and dynamic
characteristics are taken into consideration. Candidates
include problematic units (reoccurring seal or bearing failures)
& critical machinery.

Plant Outage Mechanical Support

PTI not only can diagnosis the root cause, but can Proactively
correct the problem. Whether it is rebuilding a fan, pump,
mill, compressor, etc, PTI’s expert personnel can perform.
During a plant outage timely repairs are needed, PTI can
rebuild the equipment, laser align, and dynamic balance right
on-site. After the repairs are performed we will bring back
on-line and verify the repairs were performed correctly before
putting back in service. Few companies perform this service
and fewer can do it right. Call PTI to schedule a pre-
shutdown analysis & use PTI to perform the repairs.

Experimental Modal (EMA) & Operating Deflection Shape Analysis (ODS)

An ODS is a 3D representation of any machine

structure or component to determine either
excited natural frequencies or structural
weakness. This allows for actual operating
conditions to be analyzed in 3D visual forms.

Motor Circuit & Current Analysis: On-line & Off-line Testing

These comprehensive tests examine all six

potential fault zones: stator, rotor, air gap,
power circuit, and insulation. Locating these
problems are performed both Online (Dynamic) &
Offline (Static) of the motor or generator. This
allows the component to be taken from service at
a scheduled shutdown.

Ultrasonic Leak Testing

Ultrasonic analysis is used in pinpointing leaks,

or failing steam traps, which translate to lost
dollars in medical, compressed, or steam
systems. Performing these services allows for
tracking and calculating these lost dollars.

Structural and/or Seismic Analysis

The Predictive Technologies Inc. (PTI) team tests existing or future areas for
unwanted building vibrations. Seismic transmissions have undesired effects on
MRI’s, microscopes, or other sensitive equipment. These may be transmitted
from such sources as fans, pumps, or other transient vibrations. PTI can not
only locate these sources, but also perform the necessary corrective actions.

Acoustical and Octave Band Analysis

PTI uses high resolution and octave band analysis to

determine and locate offending frequencies. These
sound pressure levels are then analyzed to
determine corrective actions necessary.
Attenuation, absorption, or deflection is just some
techniques used to alleviate these frequencies.

Infrared Thermography & Thermal Trending

Thermography, or thermal imaging, detects heat patterns or temperature

changes in objects. These changes allow the user to discover problems prior
to costly downtime, or monitor developing problems so maintenance can be
scheduled during a planned downtime or when budget is available. Your IR
program is determined by how well you “Manage your Data”. Using PTI’s
thermal trending capabilities allows for Detailed Documentation, Prioritized
Problem Reporting, & Inventory Management.

Wear Analysis

Determine mechanism of wear and solutions by examination of worn parts. By

examining components after failure such things can be determined such as
electrical fluting or lubrication issues in bearings. Performing vibration analysis
also aids in the analysis up to and prior to components failing.

Oil and Refrigerant Analysis

Proper lubrication of machinery is of the greatest importance in equipment to

maintain their life cycle. Implementation of recommended oil analysis intervals
is a key component in predictive diagnostics program. This aids in pinpointing
wear metals, moisture, acidity, or defects associated with specific machine
components such as gears, refrigerant systems, and bearings.
