Course Title: Engineering Mechanics Time: 2 hours.
(USE SEPARATE ANSWER SCRIPT FOR EACH PART)

PART A
(There are THREE Questions in this Part. Answer any TWO.)

1 For the frame and loading shown in Figure 1, determine the reactions at C and D. 15

Figure 1
2 A rope ABCD is looped over two pipes as shown in Figure 2. Knowing that the coefficient of 15
static friction is 0.25, determine-
(i) The smallest value of the mass m for which equilibrium is possible.
(ii) The corresponding tension in portion BC of the rope.

3 a) What is moment of inertia? What are the factors on which moment of inertia depends? 03
b) Determine the mass moment of inertia of the steel fixture shown in Figure 3b with respect to 12
(i) The x-axis
(ii) The y-axis
(iii) The z-axis

PART B
(There are THREE Questions in this Part. Answer any TWO.)

4 a) State the linear momentum conservation principle with an example. 03

b) Block B of mass 10 kg rests on the upper surface of a 22 kg wedge A as shown in Figure 4b. 12
Knowing that the system is released from rest and neglecting friction, determine-
(i) The acceleration of B
(ii) The velocity of B relative to A at t=0.5 s.

Figure 4b
5 A 500 gm collar can slide without friction on the curved rod BC in a horizontal plane. 15
Knowing that the undeformed length of the spring is 80 mm and that K=400KN/m, determine-
(i) The velocity that the collar should be given at A to reach B with zero velocity.
(ii) The velocity of the collar when it eventually reaches C.

Figure 5
6 Rod AB can slide freely along the floor and the inclined plane. At the instant shown, the 15
velocity of end A is 1.4 m/s to the left. Determine-
(i) The angular velocity of the rod
(ii) The velocity of end B of the rod.
