Table of Contents – References Tab, top left Table of contents tab. For this to work, all of the section
titles must be in a HEADING format. This can be done by going to the Home tab, under Styles,
choose Heading 1. This will connect each section to the table of contents and will change according
to changes made. Make sure the page numbers refresh as you make changes to the lab report. If
not updating, right click and update.

Table 4: Predicted Values of Discharge and Head………………………………..…………….13

List of Figures and List of Tables – This acts similar to the table of contents. This should be put on a
separate page. Go to the References tab, and in the middle of the task bar, there is “Insert Table of
Figures.” From this box, you can exit how the Table of Figures will look like. To create the List of
Figures, make sure that under the general tab, Figures is selected for “Table Caption”. On the next
page, do the same thing to make the List of Tables, but instead make sure that “TABLES” is selected
under the general tab for “Table Caption”.

For these tables to work, all of your tables, graphs, figures, and equations need to have captions
inserted on them. This can be done by highlighting the figure or table, and either:

a. Go to the references tab, and insert caption

b. Right click and insert caption

This will connect each table and figure to the Table of Figures or Table of Tables and assign it a
page number.

Introduction (10 pts)
This section should give a good overview/background of topic, how it relates to civil and
environmental engineering or any other practical application. Give an overview of any lab
equipment used, and how it was used in lab to perform the experiment. Also, give an overview
of the main results and findings – this only needs to be a couple sentences.

Procedure (5 pts)
This section can be copied from the lab handout, but make sure to reference the lab
handout! Reference either by using numbers [1]. Or by using the author [Barkdoll, 2014]. Make
sure that these references match the full reference in the Reference section. Points will be
deducted if this is not done.

Raw Data (5 pts)

Include raw tables and figures in this section. Make SURE not to just put the tables and
figures without an introduction to the data and some explanation of what the tables and figures
represent. Make sure that Table Captions are ABOVE the tables, and Figure/graph captions are
BELOW the figures/graphs.

You may also just combine this section (Raw data) with the results section if you would
like.

handout, the textbook or online.

Data Analysis Results (25 pts)

This section needs explaining! Make sure you explain the results, the importance of the
results and how you obtained them. Do NOT just put data in this section and not explain it.
There should be an in-depth explanation of the data and results. Notice how the figure caption in
BELOW the figure. Again, you can insert figure captions by right clicking on the figure and
clicking on “Insert Caption” and Word will do this for you automatically. This will also allow
you to insert a Table of Figures and will link the figure with what page number it is on.

Make sure to show all calculations and equations used. Highlight your answer if you
made calculations and SHOW WORK! Use the equations function in Word to do this. Go to the
INSERT tab at the top and to the right there will be an EQUATION button and will open the
equations functions you can use.

Discussion (25 pts)
This section is where you answer the questions posted in the lab handout. Do not number
or list the question and then just answer them. Make this section fit with the report and make
sure it is in paragraph form. Discuss if the results make sense and/or match your expectations
based on your knowledge of the subject. Discuss any possible sources of error between results
and those expected. Discuss possible solutions if appropriate. Also talk about possible error
sources in practice. Make sure you answer all the questions in the lab handout, as this section is
worth quite a bit of points.

Conclusions (10pts)

This section should be a good wrap up of the report, giving a good explanation of results
and findings, recommendations for practice as appropriate, and a good overview of the lab.
Should be a couple of paragraphs.
