JUSTIFY ALL UNDERSTANDING NECESSARY TO ARRIVE AT EACH SOLUTION

Written Response 1 1
The following transformations were applied to the function 𝑦𝑦 = 𝑓𝑓(𝑥𝑥) to create 𝑦𝑦 = 𝑔𝑔(𝑥𝑥), where 𝑓𝑓(𝑥𝑥) = sin 𝑥𝑥 and
𝜋𝜋
𝑔𝑔(𝑥𝑥) = 2 sin 2𝑥𝑥 + − 4.
2

• Write the mapping notation to describe the transformation. (D)

• State the amplitude, period, phase shift and vertical displacement of the transformed function. (D/P)

• Sketch and label one complete cycle of the graph of 𝑔𝑔(𝑥𝑥). You may use the grid provided or create your
own grid. Explain how the graph was drawn by showing/explaining all steps used as a transformation of the
graph of 𝑓𝑓(𝑥𝑥) . (P)
Written Response 2 1

The top of a flag pole sways back and forth in high winds. The top sways 10 cm to the right and 10 cm to the left of
its vertical position 240 times every minute. At 𝑡𝑡 = 0, the pole is at its vertical resting position, and then it starts
moving to the right.
• Sketch a graph of the relationship between time and distance for one full minute. (P)

• Determine the equation of a sinusoidal function to describe the distance the top of the pole is from its
vertical resting position in terms of time. (E)

• If the wind speed decreases such that the sway is reduced by 20%, but the frequency of the swaying
remains the same, determine the new equation. (E)
Written Response 3

Use the following information to answer the questions below

3 sin2 𝜃𝜃 + sin 𝜃𝜃 − 2 = 0 𝑓𝑓𝑓𝑓𝑓𝑓 0˚ ≤ 𝜃𝜃 < 360˚

• Algebraically solve the equation for the given domain and if needed, round to the nearest tenth. (P)

• Give the general solution(s) expressed in degrees. (E)
