moong and peas.)

Approximately 1 mt per year of red lentils are imported by private parties, while 0.2 mt of
pulses — including red kidney beans and white chickpea — are imported through an
open general licence (OGL)
The Union government has been claiming that it has not directly imported pulses but at the
same time, it has made imports through private parties. In 2018-19, India imported 2.527
million metric tonnes (MT)

According to the documents provided by the government, 50 per cent of pulses were

imported into India from Myanmar and Canada. Around 700,000 tonnes were imported

from Myanmar, followed by Canada with 520,000 tonnes.

India has imported 228,000 tonnes from Mozambique, 155,000 tonnes from Russia and
118,000 tonnes from Tanzania.

“India has a memorandum of understanding with Mozambique with an import clause

stating that import will be done through private parties,” an expert who follows the pulses
trade.
