TERMS DEFINITIONS
LISTENING It is the ability to understand what we hear.
They can be monologues or interactions,
with or without visual reinforcement, and
the intention is the same as in reading: to
extract the general idea, details or deduced
information. We exercise this skill by
listening to the radio or podcasts, watching
series or conversing with someone, for
example.
SPEAKING The ability to produce complete, relevant
and meaningful oral messages. It includes
interactive communication in
conversations, in which listening and
speaking are alternated. Its biggest
complication lies in its immediacy and
pronunciation, so it is one of the skills that
gives students the most nightmares. We
exercise it when we make a presentation or
chat with someone.
READING It is the ability to understand a written text.
Depending on the level and exercise, you
can focus on understanding the general
idea, on looking for specific details or even
on deducing information from the data
shown. We exercise this skill every time
we read something in the language.
WRITING It is the ability to produce a coherent and
relevant text. Spelling and grammatical
structures are the biggest obstacles to
overcome, although it is less challenging
than writing because it gives you more

time to think and sometimes allows you to


use a dictionary. We practice this skill
when writing messages, notes or texts.
