This study examines the relationship between firm size and innovation using data from the Netherlands. The authors find that smaller firms are more innovative on a per employee basis than larger firms. Specifically, the number of patents per employee is highest in firms with less than 20 employees and declines as firm size increases. The results suggest that smaller firms may be a more fertile breeding ground for innovation than larger firms.
