Lesson 2: The Baptism and Temptation of Jesus

Jesus’ baptism is a baptism of the Holy Spirit and fire (cf. Mt. 3:11) Through Jesus’ baptism,
we share His mission to bring Good News and light in building God’s Kingdom on earth.
However, as a baptized person, we are not exempted in many obstacles that stop us in loving
ourselves and others.

B. On Temptation: Know My Weakness

Eskimo Wolf Hunter

Wolf hunting is a dangerous job. However, according to tradition, the Eskimo has his style of
hunting wolves. This is how an Eskimo hunter kills a wolf.

First, the Eskimo prepares his knife blade by coating it with animal blood and allowing it to
freeze. Then, he adds layer after layer of blood until the blade is completely covered with the
frozen blood.

Next, the hunter fixes his knife with the blade up in the ground. When a wolf follows its
sensitive nose to the source of the scents and finds out the bait, it licks it, savoring the frozen
blood. It goes on licking faster, more and more vigorously lapping the blade until the keen
edge is bared. Feverishly now, harder and harder, the wolf licks the blade in the cold Arctic
night. Its craving for blood becomes so great that the wolf does not notice the razor-sharp
sting of the naked blade on its tongue. Nor does it recognize the moment when its insatiable
thirst is being satisfied by its warm blood. Its carnivorous appetite continues to crave more
until in the morning night, the wolf is found dead on the snow.
