Chapter 1 SOIL, MATERIAL AND GEO-TECHNICAL

INVESTIGATION
1.1. MATERIALS REPORT:
Introduction
This chapter covers the details of test and investigation carried out for evaluating the
characteristics of the sub-grade along the project corridor to establish the basis for the
design of various elements of the road including pavement and sub grade,
embankment and structures.
The main task carried out for soil and material investigation includes:
 Collection and Review of available soil data from various division of
Mizoram
 Soil classification along the proposed road
 Investigation of sub grade soil
 Investigation of construction material including identification and inspection
of potential source of construction material and extraction sites; testing and
evaluating of construction material for suitability for project road
construction.
 Geo-technical investigation for bridges and other structures.
 Pit test for foundation of structures
Investigations
The detailed investigations include both field and laboratory testing. Field work
covered field density test, sub-grade soil sampling by excavating test pits,
identification of rock sources and soil borrow sources/ quarries within reasonable
short haulage distances of the project road. Test pits were also excavated wherever
necessary to obtain samples for testing.
Appropriate laboratory tests were carried out on the representative samples of the
soil and material obtained during field investigations to determine relevant
engineering properties.
Standard Test Procedures
The following standard test procedures were followed for field testing, soil sampling
and laboratory testing:

1.1.1. Soil Classification

In case of hill road, the soil classification of the hill face (hill/ valley side) plays an
important part.
Soil classifications consist of the following:
 Ordinary Soil
 Soft Rock
 Hard Rock
The classification is mostly done visually. The classification is tabulated as follows:

1.1.4. Investigation of Water Tables

The water table depth along the road corridor has been measured at suitable
locations. The water table depth is dependent upon the season and the precipitation.
There is no location where the water is directly affecting the road bank.
1.2. GEOLOGY AND SOIL
The North-East India is located on the north-east edge of the Himalayan orogenic
belt resulted from Indo-Eurasian continental plate collision that took place during
Cenozoic era, and represents one of the youngest and the highest mountain range in
the world. The Himalayan orogenic belt has a unique agglomeration with a
diversified geological setup. The various topographic features include the Himalayan
mountain belt in the north, the Indo-Myanmar Range in the east, Shillong Massif
Plateu in the west, and the expansive Brahmaputra forming the Assam plains in
between.
Mizoram state is predominately composed of mountainous terrain of tertiary rocks.
The mountain ridges strike north to south direction in parallel series. The mountain
ranges are separated from one another by narrow deep river valleys. The elevation
ranges from 40 meters to 2,157 meters, the highest point at Phawngpui. There are
only a few and small patches of flat lands, which are mostly intermontane basins.
Figure 2.1 shows the geological map of the Mizoram state. According to this map, the
geology along NH302 consists of Bokabil formation and Bhuban formation of Surma
groups.
The soils in the project area are primarily silty sands with gravel and rock fragments.
The area exposes predominantly low grade metamorphite rocks comprising
sandstone with concretions, shale, siltstone and conglomerate Based on the field
observations and microscopic study, rock of this area can be classified into the

Soil texture, in general, varies from sandy loams, clayey loams to clay. Although the
soils are mature, profuse rainy spells in the region coupled with the high gradients
have accelerated the problem of leaching of the loose soils. These soils are highly
porous with low water holding capacity and this is the main cause of the low water
table in Mizoram. The soils of Mizoram are deficient in potassium, phosphorous,
nitrogen and humus. The traditional jhum cultivation has adversely affected the
productivity. Although superficial greenery is observed owing to the profuse
rainfall, the tract is actually in the process of fast degradation. The pH of these soils is
acidic to neutral due to excessive leaching. The soil structure of the project area is
summarized below.

1.3.2. Drilling
Since the site itself is a rocky terrain, drilling was undertaken from the very
beginning of the hole. Drilling was done by rotary core drilling method deploying
‘Geo’ core drilling rig. Core drilling is a process in which a sampler, consisting of a
tube (core barrel) with a cutting bit at its end, cuts annular hole in a rock mass
thereby creating a cylinder or core of rocks which is recovered in the core barrel.
Both TC and diamond bits were used during the drilling operation. All the boreholes
were systematically logged and drilling data were noted. Borehole logs are presented
in the annexure – I.

1.3.3. Standard Penetration Test

Standard penetration tests (SPT) were conducted in all exploratory bore holes at
regular intervals as per as the provision laid down in IS: 2131 - 1981. The split spoon
sampler used for such tests was of standard design and dimensions as stipulated in
IS: 9640-1980. The split spoon sampler in the entire test had been adapted to lower
end of drill rods taken up-to specific depth of test. The split spoon sampler was
advanced by driving with a drop hammer, weighing 63.5 kg. Falling freely through a
height of 75 cm. A record of number of blows required for penetration of 30 cm after
penetration of first 15 cm as seating drive at the specific depth of test in each bore
hole was recorded as 'N' values for corresponding test depths in the respective bore
holes.
The disturbed soil samples, collected from the split spoon sampler after completion
of each test had been subsequently used for visual identification and classification of
the subsurface deposits and for preparation of the bore hole logs and also for
carrying out laboratory tests.

1.3.4. Sampling
Due to rocky nature of site, drilling was introduced from the very beginning; no 4”
undisturbed soil sample (UDS) could be obtained. Mainly core samples were
collected during drilling work. Those samples have been relied upon for

18
Construction of 2-laning with hard shoulder
Detailed Project
configuration of NH-302 (From Lunglei to Tlabung)
under ‘Bharatmala Pariyojana’ in the state of Mizoram Report

understanding the properties of the sub-soil profile. Core samples were used both for
visual identification and laboratory test. Wash samples were also collected from
boreholes, which have been mainly used for visual identification.

1.3.5. Water Table Observation

Water levels in the boreholes were observed during and after completion of drilling
operation. The final water levels were recorded in the field and are shown in the
individual logs.

1.3.6. Laboratory Investigation

Since the site is a rocky terrain, mainly rock cores have been recovered from
boreholes. Various laboratory tests on rock cores have been conducted. Following
parameters has been tested in the laboratory.

(a) Unit weight.

(b) Specific gravity.

(c) Water absorption.

(d) Void ratio.

(e) Porosity.

(f) Point load.

(g) Uni-axial compressive strength.

(h) Modulus of elasticity.

1.4. RESULTS OF INVESTIGATION

1.4.1. General
This Section contains discussion on results of sub-soil exploration. The objective of
the investigation was overall assessment of sub-soil conditions and evaluation of
foundation parameters at specified borehole locations. For evaluation of foundation
parameters, sub-soil profile was established first. Analyses of various sub-soil data
lead to selection and evaluation of foundation design parameters
(i) The sub soils in general are of good quality. The subsoil is a Hard yellowish
brown silty clay with kankars followed by Medium dense brownish grey silty
sand then completely weathered dark gray brownish slate then Highly
weathered dark grey slate up to depth of bore termination.
(ii) Considering the subsoil condition, it is proposed to go for pile foundation
(iii) Chemical test were carried out on a few soil samples so as to detect the pH
value, Sulphate, Chloride etc. It is seen that all the values are well within
limits. So no precaution will be required for foundation concrete. Either
Ordinary Portland cement or Portland Slag cement or Portlant Pozzolana
cement can be used for the purpose.
