Soil texture, in general, varies from sandy loams, clayey loams to clay. Although the
soils are mature, profuse rainy spells in the region coupled with the high gradients
have accelerated the problem of leaching of the loose soils. These soils are highly
porous with low water holding capacity and this is the main cause of the low water
table in Mizoram. The soils of Mizoram are deficient in potassium, phosphorous,
nitrogen and humus. The traditional jhum cultivation has adversely affected the
productivity. Although superficial greenery is observed owing to the profuse
rainfall, the tract is actually in the process of fast degradation. The pH of these soils is
acidic to neutral due to excessive leaching. The soil structure of the project area is
summarized below.
Table 2.1 Soil Structures in Project Area
1.2.1. Seismicity
The site area falls under the Seismic zone V (as per IS: 1893; Part -1: 2002). This area is
high damage risk zone.
1.3. METHODS OF INVESTIGATION
1.3.1. General

1.3.2. Drilling
Since the site itself is a rocky terrain, drilling was undertaken from the very
beginning of the hole. Drilling was done by rotary core drilling method deploying
‘Geo’ core drilling rig. Core drilling is a process in which a sampler, consisting of a
tube (core barrel) with a cutting bit at its end, cuts annular hole in a rock mass
thereby creating a cylinder or core of rocks which is recovered in the core barrel.
Both TC and diamond bits were used during the drilling operation. All the boreholes
were systematically logged and drilling data were noted. Borehole logs are presented
in the annexure – I.
1.3.4. Sampling
Due to rocky nature of site, drilling was introduced from the very beginning; no 4”
undisturbed soil sample (UDS) could be obtained. Mainly core samples were
collected during drilling work. Those samples have been relied upon for

under ‘Bharatmala Pariyojana’ in the state of Mizoram Report
understanding the properties of the sub-soil profile. Core samples were used both for
visual identification and laboratory test. Wash samples were also collected from
boreholes, which have been mainly used for visual identification.
(e) Porosity.
1.4.1. General
This Section contains discussion on results of sub-soil exploration. The objective of
the investigation was overall assessment of sub-soil conditions and evaluation of
foundation parameters at specified borehole locations. For evaluation of foundation
parameters, sub-soil profile was established first. Analyses of various sub-soil data
lead to selection and evaluation of foundation design parameters
(i) The sub soils in general are of good quality. The subsoil is a Hard yellowish
brown silty clay with kankars followed by Medium dense brownish grey silty
sand then completely weathered dark gray brownish slate then Highly
weathered dark grey slate up to depth of bore termination.
(ii) Considering the subsoil condition, it is proposed to go for pile foundation
(iii) Chemical test were carried out on a few soil samples so as to detect the pH
value, Sulphate, Chloride etc. It is seen that all the values are well within
limits. So no precaution will be required for foundation concrete. Either
Ordinary Portland cement or Portland Slag cement or Portlant Pozzolana
cement can be used for the purpose.
