How to run a Multi-user server

In Tekla Structures, Multi-user mode allows several users to access one model at the same
time. Because the service is network-based, it presents advantages and disadvantages that
should be reviewed carefully before proceeding to work using this method. Alternatively,
Model sharing allows for efficient cloud-based project collaboration where issues presented
by network storage are eliminated. This article provides some guidelines for using either
one.

The Tekla Structures Multi-user service runs on a TCP/IP network and must consist of a server
computer running xs_server.exe, and a file server computer containing the master model.
That means all Multi-user models need to be in a network directory. Keep in mind that all
members of any shared model must use the same setup (i.e., Environment and
Role), the same Version and Service Pack of Tekla Structures, and preferably the
same configuration/license type . If the configuration is not the same, be sure that all
licenses involved generate the same component types (Conceptual vs. Detailed ).

The steps are as follow:

Download the Multiuser server (note that it is the same version of the server for versions 17.0 +
forward).
Install it, preferably where your license server is located. By default, the server files will be
placed in C:\Program Files (x86)\Tekla Structures Multiuser Server.
As indicated in the linked article Multi-user server installation , run (double-click on) the
xs_server.exe inside that folder. This will ignite the Multiuser server.
You will see a quick CMD screen prop up when running the xs_server.exe and then it will
disappear. That means that the multiuser server is already running in the background.
If you get an error in the CMD window, run the xs_server.exe as admin.

Now, the client computer can convert any model into a Multiuser model as shown in the
images below:
Current Interface &
Previous Interface

Remember that since this is not a cloud base service, as indicated above the model that
is going to be converted to Multiuser has to be placed in a Network location so that other
computers can have access to the same model.

When converting to Multiuser you will be prompted to type in the Server address. Type in the server's IP address there.

You can find additional information about the Multi-user system in the linked article. Also, see
here on how to troubleshoot for multi-user database errors after you have successfully
started a Multi-user model.
