The reading and the lecture are both about the conditions of keeping animals in

captivity. The author of the reading believes that all animals should be free
because a person can not create a natural habitat. The lecturer challenges the
statement made by the author. He is of the opinion that people can create places
similar to the natural habitat for each animal.

First of all, the author suggests that the population of animals in zoos is not
increasing. It is mentioned that it will be better if people used protecting
programs for animals in the wild. The argument is challenged by the lecturer. He
says that zoos have success in increasing the population of animals, for instance,
zoo workers in California were able to save the bird species from extinction.

Secondly, the writer contends that the conditions of keeping animals in zoos do not
coincide with the natural conditions of survival of any animal species. The article
notes that it is very uncomfortable for a lion to be in a tight cage because he can
not run around. However, the lecturer opposes this by asserting that places for
animals in modern zoos look like their home contents. He elaborates on it by
mentioning the zoo in North Carolina, which has a natural philosophy and because of
this, there is an artificial Africa for the grey gorillas.

Finally, it is stated that people can study animals from books. The author
establishes that scientists can follow animals in the wild. On the other hand, the
lecturer points out in zoos you can see specific types of animals. He puts forth
the idea that usually you can not see a gorilla in your back yard every day..
