QUESTION 38

a) Drift velocity is given by the relationship, I = Anev

0.0025 x 10-3 = (3.0 x 10 -3 x 1.0 x10 -3) x (4.0 x 1021) x (1.60 x 10-19) v Drift
velocity,v = l.3 x10 -3 m s-1
BI
b) Hall Voltage, VH = net where t is the thickness parallel to the magnetic
field.
t = 1.0 x 10-3m
V (net)
B= I = 15.4 T

c) Applying Fleming’s left hand rule, the force on the charge carriers is
towards the surface PQ which is negatively charged. Hence, the charge
carriers are free electron.
BI 1
d) From the relationship, VH = net , the Hall voltage VH∝ n
where
n = number of charge charriers per unit volume. For metallic conductor, n is very
large. Hence VH is too small to be measured. For semi-conductor, n is
comparatively smaller. Hall volttage VH is large enough to be measured.
QUESTION 5
a) The charge carriers in metallic conductors are free electrons

The setting of a potential difference across a current-carrying conductor when a perpendicular

magnetic field is applied is called the Hall Effect. A magnetic force Fm acts on the electrons and
pushes them to the surface P, leaving behind positive charges on surface Q. An electric field E is
thus set up. The resultant electric force thus acts downwards on the electrons. At equilibrium, the
upward magnetic force is balanced by the downward electric force. Hall Voltage VH is across
the surface P and Q.

Bev = eE
Bv = E
I VH
B( nAe ) = d
BId
VH= nAe
