DEFINITION OF STUFFY NOSE

Stuffy nose: : The presence of increased secretions and mucus in the nasal passages, most

commonly arising as a result of a common cold, allergic reaction, or inflammation or infection of

the paranasal sinuses (sinus infection).

Sinus problems and sinus-related symptoms are common reasons people see their doctors.

Symptoms include pain in the forehead or between the eyes, toothache, feeling of fullness in the

mid-face, stuffy nose, and congestion.

IT MAY START AS A COLD

Pressure and pain in the sinuses (in different areas of the face or behind the eyes) are the main

symptoms of sinusitis. More severe infections may lead to a yellow or green discharge from the

nose, sore throat, headache, fever, and an overall feeling of fatigue.

Remedies :

Nasal sprays and nasal decongestants can be used for relief of the symptoms of acute sinusitis.

Home remedies can help relieve some symptoms of sinusitis. Irrigation of the sinuses with a

Neti-pot or squeeze bottle, or breathing in warm humidified air can help decrease symptoms of

sinusitis. However, follow directions to keep such devices clean as they may worsen the

problem. If symptoms are due to allergies, over-the-counter antihistamines may help.

You may not be able to completely avoid getting sinusitis, but there are ways to prevent
it in some cases:

 Do not smoke
 Avoid dry environments
 Use a humidifier when needed
 Drink plenty of fluids
 Seek treatment for chronic allergies that can trigger sinus inflammation

Do your head and face hurt? Acetaminophen or ibuprofen can make it better. Decongestant

nasal sprays can open up your stuffy nose, but don't use them for more than a few days. Over

time they could make your symptoms worse.

DO: STAY HYDRATED

Drink plenty of fluids during a bout of sinusitis. Something warm like herbal tea can hit the spot.

Studies show a steaming mug isn't just a psychological comfort. Hot liquids can help break up

that stuffiness in your nose.

DON'T DRINK ALCOHOL

DO: USE WARM COMPRESSES

Moist heat can relieve your sinus pressure, open up those blocked passages in your nose, and

ease pain. Hold a wet towel against your face or breathe in steam through a cloth. A hot shower

will help loosen mucus.

DO: USE A HUMIDIFIER

Cool mist can make you less stuffy, but make sure you keep the water clean. Empty the tank

every day and wash it out before you refill it. Once a week you'll need to clean it with diluted

bleach or vinegar to keep mold and bacteria away.

DON'T HURRY BACK TO THE POOL
