Proposal Description

Community Development through creative education is an “invent” initiative that provides school going children
with quality learning on waste management, in-school activities, learn with fun and professional development.

This activity would provide a huge scope for REEL to brand itself as a community friendly organization, and would be
able to reach every individual without spending on advertising on other media.
Through this program, any corporate organization could provide the schools of Hyderabad, A.P. or any place where
the company holds a waste management project across India, with the following services:

 A comprehensive year long syllabus for the schools

 Various activities designed for students to learn about waste management.
 Training notes for the schoolteachers and community members to help them prepare their students and the
community for various activity.

The goal of the Students / Community Development through the creative education initiative is to provide our
community with quality education and to utilize the experience of the REEL staff to ensure that the presentation of
the activities will be successful. Skills gained from the professional development are transferable and will allow REEL
to plan and implement a comprehensive series of future events in schools.

Need within the Community

Community participation is the process by which individuals and families understand responsibility for their own
health and welfare of societies. Communities should be motivated enough to solve their common problems
themselves. This enables them to become agents of their own development instead of positive beneficiaries of
development aid.

The key to the success of solid waste management system in any city is the cooperation of citizens. Citizens ought to
be involved in proper storage, collection and safe disposal of waste. Community should also be made aware of
health risks associated with improper solid waste management.

The existing management of solid wastes in any city depends completely on municipality services, which eventually
led into the scenario of solid waste disposal as only government's responsibility. But, with a rapidly growing urban
population, current institutions are unable to provide an adequate level of services, posing a serious threat to public
health and environment. The waste is just dumped at such sites and remains littered/unattended causing unhygienic
conditions, foul smell, environmental pollution, unsightly appearance etc. Consequently, vulnerable group/direct
stakeholders are at much higher risk of communicable and non - communicable diseases. Hence, it is essential for
the success of such project to understand the requirement of public participation and support.

In the past there have been no major efforts to create community awareness for citizens, which is a vital component
of solid waste management system. The community participation can be strengthened through multidisciplinary
nature of Information, Education and Communication (IEC) for the citizen one side and Capacity Building Programs
for the REEL officials & staff another side.

Program Implementation

Invent will complete a Community Profile, a series of assessments designed to determine the current strengths and
challenges of community education. This profile will also allow invent to design educational programs that are most
relevant to our community.
Upon completion of the profile, REEL will receive a syllabus containing information, templates and guidelines for
successful presentation in the areas of waste management and outreach programs.
The syllabus will be tailored for use in the schools and community and REEL staff can provide consultation for
implementation. REEL members will work together with the school to establish benchmarks for success in the area
of waste management education, community involvement and response.

REEL can conduct such educational programmes in area schools across India. Special workshops and programs can
be provided for children in grades K-12. All the activities are highly interactive providing students with an
opportunity to participate as well as observe.

REEL staff will also meet with area teachers and community members, providing them with information about the
syllabus and giving them training in activities relative to this syllabus.

These community members will then begin a campaign designed to increase community awareness, interest and
education about the waste management activities by REEL.

This project will reach a total of people ranging from pre-K through adult.

Objectives of the Syllabus

This syllabus would play a key role in helping attain solid waste management objectives through its ability to provide
knowledge and information on important ecological and solid waste management concepts, effect individual and
collective action as well as promote and/or reinforce social norms.
This can also be used to help achieve policy goals and promote the participation of community members and
stakeholders through participatory and informed decision making processes. It would play a critical role in fostering
interest and participation in developing an integrated solid waste management system. The objectives of this
syllabus are:

• To bring attitudinal and behavioral changes about the garbage segregation and sanitation practices, among
students and the residents of the city.

• To sensitize the students and residents about the benefits of source segregation for clean and green
environment.

• To improve the garbage management in the school / area.

• To improve the service delivery.

• To reduce the amount of solid waste to be disposed to the landfill to get the clean, healthy and green areas.

• To sensitize and motivate the teaching staff about their responsibilities for educating the young generation
about waste management.

As this initiative has a strong education component and many people will respond to this aspect, it is important to
refer to the important role that the learning with fun plays in education.

Evaluation

Evaluation for this program will come from several points:

• Staff and REEL will evaluate the success of the initiative based upon the benchmarks they established at the
outset.
• Opinion surveys will be distributed to community participants, requesting response to all areas.
• Opinion surveys will be distributed to organization members requesting response to the effectiveness of the
training.
• The sale of the syllabus would itself be a criterion for the success of the syllabus.

Evaluation benchmarks include:

• Schools enrolled
• Books sold
• Community awareness and involvement
• Student and teacher participation in educational programs
• Effectiveness and transferability of professional development skills
