Airium – Basics of Acoustic - Pysicals phenomena
What is a sound ?
Vibration of air Molecules
Acoustic wave resulting from the vibration of the air due to pressure and
depressions

Sound is a combination of different waves

The sound level (Pressure in Pa) & the Frequency (Hz) are the 2 most important
parameters when talking about Acoustic

Airium – Basic of Acoustic - Systems performances in laboratory

 Airborne sound insulation

Sound reduction index (Rw, STC)

Emission Room Reception Room

There are several calculation methods.

- System W : RW(C,Ctr) Europe
- Sound Transmission Class (USA ; Korea...).

Sound transmission loss can be measure or predict ( Acousys).

Rw (C, Ctr) = 44 (-3, -9) dB
Solid bricks 50mm 35
Hollows blocks 100mm 36

Good
(Origin : CEBTP)
 R W : Sound reduction index with reference curve
 Rw + C : Sound reduction index + a weighted correction response of the ear
 Rw + Ctr : Sound reduction index + a weighted correction of a traffic(road) noise

The higher the Rw or STC number the better the performance

 Impact sound insulation

Impact sound pressure level (Lnw, IIC)
Measurements : An impact noise is create in the upper
Emission Room room with standardised machine and we measure directly
the sound level in the room

Predictions : Acousys Material ex Lnw

 Sound Absorption
Definition
Absorption of the sound consist of reduced the
sound coming from the same rooms
w or NRC are the part of the sound not reflected
by the material

Perfect reflecting w is around 0

Example is marble

Perfect absorbent w is around 1

Airium – Basic of Acoustic – Building performances
How the sound is transmitted inside a building?

AIRBORNE :
Speech, radio, télévision

In building the noise is coming & is IMPACTS :

transmitted
walk, impacts…
from everywhere by every thing

EQUIPEMENTS :
Plumbing, furnace, fan

Performances in situ is different than laboratory measurement
