Case Study #2 and Discussion

“Rahul”

Rahul is a 5-year-old boy with primary right shoulder

osteosarcoma with metastases to the spine. His dad reports
Rahul’s unusual clinging to him or his mom, and difficulty going
to sleep. His parents state that Rahul does not complain of pain
but really doesn’t move that much. They have asked for no
further visitation by anyone and just want time alone with him.
Rahul’s parents openly discuss in front of him the fear of disease
progression.

1. Why do you think Rahul is clinging more to his parents?

2. What pain assessment scale could be used to assess Rahul’s

pain?

3. What other factors in Rahul’s case could be contributing to his

reluctance to report pain?

4. What education is needed for Rahul and his parents?
