SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT: GRADED (50 POINTS)

I. Short Response Essay. Answer the following items briefly and succinctly. (10 points each)

1. (a) Are all precise measurements accurate? Why or why not?

(b) Are all accurate measurements precise? Why or why not?

2. Imagine you are already a professional: Scientist, Engineer, Medical Worker, Architect, Computer Expert, or
Teacher. What measuring device would you usually use? What concrete examples of random errors and
systematic errors are you susceptible? How would you minimize these errors?

Sample answer: I am Dina Majal. I am a Chemical Engineer. I usually use laboratory equipment like the
analytical balance to measure mass of a substance. One of the systematic errors that I encounter is
inaccuracy in the calibration of the instrument. I deal with this by recalibration and requiring a standard
check weight. One of the random errors that I commit is wrong technique in measurement because I
weight hot objects sometimes. I correct this by putting first the substance in a desiccator to cool.

II. Problem Solving. Solve the following problems systematically using the GUESS method of problem-
solving. (10 points each)

1. Suppose you are riding a tricycle. The tricycle travels for 5.6 km from NDMU-IBED to your house in
20 minutes. Calculate your average speed (1) in kilometers per hour (km/h), and in meters per
second (m/s). (Note: Average speed is distance traveled divided by time of travel.)

2. In an experiment, 10 trials were done to determine the speed of a bullet. The measurements for the speed of
a bullet in centimeter/second (cm/s) are as follows:
50.02 45.95 48.58 50.01 49.87
46.75 48.88 47.63 45.87 46.21
Determine the (a) mean, (b) variance, (c) standard deviation, and (d) measured range of the projectile.

3. In your house, measure a regularly-shaped two-dimensional surface (ex: surface of a table, frame of the
door, mirror, cabinet, circumference of the electric fan, etc.). Solve for the area in square centimeters (cm 2),
then convert the answer to square inches (in 2). Note: Follow correct number of significant figures in reporting
your answer.
