◼ The electric vehicle market has been witnessing healthy growth rates in recent years. In 2020, many European countries witnessed a double-digit growth rate in EV sales.
The European market captured around 43% of the global EV sales in 2020, compared to 26% in 2019. The overall sales of plug-in vehicles reached about 3.24 million
units, compared to 2.26 million in 2019. This spike in sales is the result of an increase in regulatory norms by various organizations and governments, to control emission
levels and to propagate zero-emissions vehicles.
◼ Governments across the world have introduced various schemes and initiatives to encourage buyers to choose electric vehicles over conventional vehicles. The
California ZEV program, which aims to have 1.5 million electric vehicles on road by 2025, is one such initiative. India, China, the United Kingdom, South Korea, France,
Germany, Norway, and the Netherlands, are some of the countries which have various incentives for people willing to buy an electric vehicle.
◼ These initiatives have propelled the automakers to increase their expenditure on the R&D of electric vehicles, which eventually may push the growth of the electric
vehicle charging station market. The government regulations and incentive schemes appear to have a strong impact on people, as there was a considerable change in
the purchase pattern, from conventional IC engine vehicles to electric vehicles. The change has not resulted in a slump of IC engine vehicle sales, but rather, created a
promising market for electric vehicles in the present and for the future.
◼ Electric vehicles have become at par with (and sometimes surpassed) IC engine vehicles in terms of performance, maintenance, and the initial cost of purchase. Tesla has
manufactured electric cars which claim to have greater acceleration, power, and top speed than an average IC engine/hybrid car.
◼ The growth of electric vehicles is anticipated to generate a linear demand for the electric vehicle charging station market over the forecast period.

Vehicle manufacturers are planning to launch a large number of electric vehicles and are entering partnerships, joint ventures, mergers and acquisitions, and increasing
their investments, to have an edge over their competitors.
➢ General Motors plans to raise its spending on electric and autonomous vehicles to USD 20 billion by 2025. The company is expected to launch 20 new electric
models by 2023 and aims to sell more than 1 million electric cars a year in the United States and China over the forecast period.
➢ Volkswagen is planning to spend USD 36 billion on electric cars across its mass-market brands by 2024. According to the company, by 2025, at least 25% of its
global sales will be electric vehicles.
➢ Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) is one of the leading vehicle manufacturers in Asia. The company is planning to launch new electric vehicles. At present, the
company has only one electric model, Verito. However, by 2021, M&M may launch the electric KUV, followed by the S210 (the electric version of XUV300) a year
later, and E-Aspire (from a partnership with Ford) six months after that.
The UK-based companies are expected to spend more than GBP 12 billion by switching their fossil fuel vehicles for clean electric versions by 2022. A survey found that
nearly half of the businesses in the United Kingdom are planning to invest in chargeable cars and vans in anticipation of the government’s ban on sales of new internal
combustion engine vehicles by 2035.
Currently, China is the most promising market for electric buses globally, and this is likely to drive e-bus demand over the forecast period. The overall bus purchases in
the country are expected to remain stable, with more than 400,000 new purchases expected by 2025. Electric bus purchases are expected to increase, supported by the
continuous government initiatives to promote e-mobility. The overall e-bus adoption is likely to reach 40% of new bus purchases globally, by 2040.
Thailand is the largest producer of vehicles in the ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) region and the 11th largest automotive producer in the world. In
March 2020, the Thailand Board of Investment announced that Thailand had received large foreign direct investments supporting the country’s growing electric vehicle
production system. According to the Electric Vehicle Association of Thailand, the number of companies that are part of Thailand’s electric vehicle industry has escalated
significantly since 2015.
Globally, companies are planning to heavily invest in electric vehicles and charging networks. This is expected to drive the electric vehicle charging station market
around the world.
◼ For chargers on commercial electricity tariffs, demand charges can dominate operating costs. As a result, the total cost of power from fast-charging stations is higher than
slower residential chargers, unless the former can achieve sufficiently high utilization rates.
◼ At current levels of utilization, commercial chargers are almost universally not economically profitable. A significant, sustained increase in demand will be needed for
commercial charging infrastructure to deliver financial returns and compete with IC engines.
◼ The high concentration of EV home charging during peak periods can overload local transformers. Utilities may have to procure additional peak capacities, unless they are
able to shift demand to off-peak periods.
◼ There are three types of chargers available for EVs. The standard 120V plug, often used for home appliances, charges slowly but can fill a battery to near-full capacity in
about 8 to 12 hours. The 240V level-2 chargers generally provide 20 to 25 miles of charge in an hour, which shortens charging time to eight hours or less. In homes, level-
2 chargers can use the same outlet type required for clothes dryers or electric ovens. Level-3 direct current (DC) fast chargers can charge a battery up to 80% in 30
minutes. According to a study by the Rocky Mountain Institute, the costs for a level-2 charger’s components range from USD 2,500 to USD 7,210. For a DC fast charger,
the costs can vary between USD 20,000 and USD 35,800. It was reported by UBS that building a Tesla Supercharger station costs around USD 250,000.
◼ Three different varieties of DC fast chargers are used by different auto manufacturers. The SAE Combined Charging System (CCS) is used by most manufacturers, the
CHAdeMO variant is used by Nissan and Mitsubishi, and the Tesla Supercharger is used by only Tesla cars. This lack of vehicle compatibility restricts universal vehicle access
to charging stations and could hinder market growth.
◼ Choosing to deploy high-powered energy chargers en route needs to be done carefully to ensure stations have high utilization. The profit potential of charging stations is
quite low in the current scenario. The profitability may only increase when there are enough electric cars on road, so that the infrastructure could have a high utilization
rate.

4. MARKET DYNAMICS | 4.2 MARKET CHALLENGES
◼ The sales in February 2020, when compared to the same time period in 2019, saw China’s BYD sales going down by 80%, BAIC BluePark’s sales falling by 65.1%, and the
sales of Chongqing Changan Automobile, which has a joint venture with Ford and Mazda, dropping by 73.7%. Other automakers such as SAIC motor, Dongfeng Motor
Group, and Geely Automotive witnessed a sales drop of 86.9%, 80.7%, and 75%. Respectively. The demand for electric vehicles went down by 20% in Europe in 2020.
◼ The COVID-19 pandemic has not only decreased consumer purchasing power, but also contributed to a significant drop in oil prices, and consequently lowered gasoline
prices. For traditional vehicles with internal combustion engines (ICEs), the drop in gasoline prices may decrease the total cost of ownership. Although EVs may still have
lower total costs of ownership than traditional ICE vehicles do in most segments, the advantage may not be as great, and that could influence sales.
◼ The electric vehicle markets across the world are experiencing a shift as consumers are seeking affordable products due to COVID-19. This potential shift in consumer
preferences have been diverted towards the used vehicles. In 2020, the demand for used vehicles increased in almost every part of the world. The increase in demand for
used cars is likely to effect the market studied.
◼ The impact on supply chain and deliveries has affected many EV charging system manufacturers across the world, as they depend on suppliers from China and Europe for
the parts for charging stations. The outbreak worldwide has resulted in delays in customer and partner deliveries.
◼ Lower disposable incomes and a tendency towards cash saving may lead to reduced usage of EVs in the short-term. This may result in low electric vehicles being used,
significantly reducing the demand for electric vehicle charging infrastructure. This trend may decrease the profitability of the charging stations
◼ As the EV charging infrastructure is highly dependent on the number of EVs in use, some companies are pushing back their project plans by a couple of years. For
instance, in December 2020, BlueSG and the SP Group of Singapore announced that they had run into a roadblock due to COVID-19 and that they were hundreds of
charging points away from their goal for 2020.
◼ The future of public and semi-public charging infrastructures is still uncertain, as there are no large-scale investments to support semi-public and public charging
infrastructures as a standalone business currently. With lower electric vehicles in use and the recent COVID-19 impact, the growth of the electric vehicle charging station
market is expected to be hindered during the forecast period.

◼ Companies are also working on a radical new technology, like utilizing robots for charging the electric
vehicle without any human intervention. For instance,
➢ In December 2020, Volkswagen Group Components introduced its prototype of mobile charging
robot. The charging robot through a Car-to-X communication can operate totally autonomously. It
independently steers the vehicle to be charged and communicates with it; it starts from opening the
charging socket flap to connecting the plug and decoupling it.
➢ Whereas in case to charge several vehicles at the same time, the mobile robot moves a mobile
energy storage unit, to the vehicle, connects it up and then uses this energy storage unit to charge
the electric vehicle battery. The energy storage unit stays with the vehicle during the charging
process. In that duration, the robot charges other electric vehicles. Once the charging service has
ended, the robot independently collects the mobile energy storage unit and takes it back to the
central charging station.
➢ There are various economical possibilities, as it can enable the operators of parking bays and
underground car parks to quickly and simply convert every parking space to charging station by
using the mobile charging robot. This will reduce any construction work and it will reduce the
potential cost.
◼ Several advancements in DC charging technologies are underway, and by the end of the forecast period,
it is expected that the charging time will almost become half, while charging cost will reduce, compared
to the today charging technologies.

7. MARKET OPPORTUNITIES AND FUTURE TRENDS
◼ There are several companies who are working towards making charging station dynamic and compact,
For instance:
➢ In April 2020, Volkswagen Group Components and the Chinese start-up Shanghai DU-POWER
New Energy Technical Co. Ltd signed in an agreement to work together to produce flexible quick
charging stations in China.
➢ With compact dimensions, the flexible quick charging station can be installed anywhere it’s
needed. When connected to the low voltage grid, the station can also become a permanent
charging point without the additional cost and effort that was required for a comparable fixed
quick charging station.
➢ The built-in battery pack can store a buffer of energy due to that it can be disconnected from the
grid, this then eases the strain on the power grid, at peak times. To ensure the sustainable use of
resources, the charging station is also designed to be able to use old batteries from electric
vehicles as energy accumulators in future. From this quick charging technology, electric vehicles
can be charged with up to 150 kW.
◼ Moreover, major companies are investing in the wireless charging solutions to stay ahead from their
competitors, such as
➢ In November 2020, Mitsubishi Corporation invested in WiTricity, a company that sells wireless-
charging systems for plug-in cars. WiTricity claims that it held more than 1,000 patents worldwide
related to the wireless charging technology.
Government initiatives are expected to play a crucial role in promoting electric vehicles in many
countries. Several countries are implementing plans to ban petrol and diesel cars in the 2030 - 2040
timeframe, to reduce emissions and encourage the sales of EVs. Moreover, several tax relaxations and
incentives for EVs are also being put in place to encourage the sales of EVs.
The results have started to show in the European countries, where electric vehicles have witnessed
an increase in adoption. In the coming years, China, the United States, and a few European countries,
like Norway and France, are well positioned to take the leading role in electric vehicles during the
forecast period, owing to the such supporting government policies.
The overall automotive market may be restrained in the immediate future due to the impact of the
COVID-19 pandemic. But the sales of EVs reached new heights by registering highest sales number ,
