€} Finally, by slightly urning the idling mixture control screw, the most favourable point should be determined and the position of the screw readjusted, if necessary. Measuring the fuel level: ©} For measuring the fuel level the car should stend on level ground, It is advisable to check the feed pressure of the injection pump before measuring the fuel level. The feeding pressure should not exceed 0.2 kglem® (2.8 psi) = 148 mm Hg at an idling speed of 1000—1200 r.p.m The feed pressure should be measured with the fuel pump testing device 000589 30 21 ond the number of revolutions with the re- volution counter 000589 1221. If the feed pressure of the fuel pump is too high, the counterpressure of the float needie valve may be overcome and the fuel might consequently exceed the normal level. Too high a pump pressure may be due either to too powerful a pump stroke ortoharden- ing of the pump membrane. In both cases the feed pressure can be brought back to the normal level by inserting shims between the intermediate flange ond the crankcase. At the pressure point the plunger should have a clearance of 0.4—0.5 mm (0.015 to 0.019 in) in relation to the com in LDC pos- ition (see also op. No. M3, No. 7677} b) The height of the fuel level is determined by measuring the position of the floct. The measurement is token from the surface (with gosket) to the upper edge of the vertic- al side of the float (Fig. M3 a/10} The distance should be h = 39—40 mm (11732117 64 in), IF the foot rests in this position, the preserib- ed fuel level of 26—28 mm (1 1/32—1 7j64 ) will be obtained. The fuel level can be regulated by carefully bending the float corm. After bending make sure that the float rests square with the surface of the carbur- ettor cover, M3a8 The corburettor cover should be taken off corefully in order not to bend the float arm. The carburettor cover, the gasket and the float should be taken off together. inch wy tat Fig. M 3/10 Remember the two strainers for the air cor- rection jet (Fig. M3./1)). Fig. M3a/11 It is advisable to measure also the fuel level itself, in order to be able to trace any defects which may have been caused by un- tightness of the floot needle valve, the float or by excessive feed pressure. Allow the engine to run at increased idling speed {about 1800 r.p,m,) before taking off the carburettor cover, in order to obtain the correct fuel level. This is of speciol impor- tance if the fuel pump has been operated by means of the lever in order to fill the corburettor The fuel level is measured with a depth gouge which is slowly pushed down to the fuel surface (Fig M 3.0 12) Fig. M3012 Note: The fuel level should be measured immediately after the carburettor cover had been token off, os the fuel will evoporate if the engine is hot If the volue obtained differs considerably from the prescribed fuel level, the irreguler- ity should net be eliminated by bending the float arm, but by checking the float needle valve and the float for tightness. At the some time check the feed pressure of the Fuel pump. Measuring the quantity injected ©) If the carburettor is mounted, it is rather difficult 10 measure the injected quantity Turn the injection pipe so that the fuel which flows out can be collected in ¢ measuring glass. For this reason it is necessary to dis- mount the air intake pipe and the choke valve casing. b) Before measuring see to it that 1. the sealing rings at the pump jet are tight, 2. the pumping lever of the membrane pump works satisfactorily, 3. a solid jet emerges ot the injection tubes immediately after the slightest move- ment of the linkage in idling position. Note: Smooth pick-up ond satisfactory acceleration are guaranteed only if the i jection tubes spray off at once, See to it that @ suitable measuring glass is ovcilable or measuring glass 000 589 31 21 ¢] Unscrew the pump jet. Turn the injection tube ond retighten with pump jet (Fig 30113), Fig. M 30/13, The quantity injected should be 0.40.6 ‘em’jstroke (0.024—0.036 cu. in/stroke), The quantity is measured by injecting five times, During injection the occelerotor linkage should be moved evenly and smoothly towards full load ond released only after injection hes stopped. The injected quantity is increased by screw- ing in the nuts ot the pump lever and reduced by screwing them oul. Note: Ihe nuts at the connection rod should not be screwed in so much that the pump lever does not touch the diaphragm shaft ‘ony more in idling position; the pump lever should still have contect (pressure point] as ‘otherwise the injection will occur too lote. Checking the vacuum cell ‘The butterfly valves of the 2nd barrel should ‘open at about 3000 r.p.m. ot full load under M309
