This section supports the Aftertreatment System (ATS) fault code codes recorded during DDEC
VI engine operation. A Suspect Parameter Number (SPN) is generated when a condition exists that
prevents the ATS from operating at peak efficiency. The codes can be for engine protection or
performance.
Per SAE standards, the Suspect Parameter Number (SPN) and Failure Mode Identifier (FMI) define
what kind of failure occurred.
A shutdown-engine protection SPN is activated when an engine operating condition exists that can
cause immediate damage to the engine. The engine should be shut down until the condition is
corrected to prevent additional damage.
A derate-engine protection SPN is activated when an engine operating condition exists that can cause
engine damage if left unattended. When the engine slowly loses power, the operator knows to correct
the condition to prevent additional damage. However; if damage is not imminent, the operator can
override the shutdown and slowly proceed (limp) to a service center to safely correct the problem.
All codes for the ATS are derate engine protection codes as listed in Table "Aftertreatment System
Codes (1 of 3)" , Table "Aftertreatment System Codes (2 of 3)" , and Table "Aftertreatment System
Codes (3 of 3)" .

A performance fault code is activated when specific conditions occur within a given amount of time
that the calibration determines is not “normal”.
