The weekly reading and the lecture videos are available on the Canvas course site.
Students are expected to demonstrate that they have done the reading by participating
in the video content questions, lecture quizzes, or reading discussions. The content
questions are not timed and can be retaken twice.
2. Quizzes
A quiz is required every other week to determine mastery of the content of the lectures,
readings, and discussions. The quizzes are time and you cannot retake them.
Knowledge does not flow like information from one source (teacher) to an empty vessel
(students) but rather comes about through interaction in dialogue. Active participation
in class discussion online —which means listening to others, asking questions, and
seeking helpful answers—is expected. Your initial post is due on Tuesday and then two
additional posts in response to your peers is due by Thursday.
4. Live Discussions:
We will have guest lectures, case studies, and group discussions during this time period
from 5:00-6:20 pm every Tuesday. Students are expected to attend all five live
discussions. There will be a make-up assignments if you cannot attend; please contact
the professor ahead of time via canvas email.
An Annotated Bibliography: Using the provided questions, you will read, analyze, and
reflect upon a primary scientific research article.
A Material Reflection: Weekly reflections will be given with specific prompts to evaluate
ability to synthesize material and apply concepts to your daily life.
The main goal of this project is to apply principles of the scientific method to a self-
experiment based on one of the dimensions of wellness of your choosing. Please read
the detailed instructions and rubric on Canvas. This project will be broken up into five
sections to be completed throughout the course. Each section of this project is a final
submission, and will build on the previously submitted section. All submissions for this
project throughout the class are final. Your FINAL for this class will be submission of the
Results/Discussion and Abstract.
McGraw Hill Connect SmartBook activities for each chapter are 10%
due on Wednesdays by 11:59 pm.

Study Roadmap
•This course is designed with a unique learning pathway to embrace self-paced learning.
Students are expected to (1) read the assigned text, (2) watch pre-recorded lectures
(and answer questions embedded into the lectures) before (3) participating in live
discussions with Professors and Classmates, (4) participate in weekly discussion board
prompts, 5) end the week with a quiz on the material or reflection which can include
journal article reflection as well. For the scientific project, the first two components are
due the first Wednesday of Session, one component due the last Friday of the session,
and two components are due for your final.
•Your interactions with the instructor and your classmates are essential to building an
understanding of the course materials. Since the summer course is only 5 weeks long, a
deadline is assigned to each assignment to ensure students are fully engaged in the
discussions and advance their learning on the same schedule.
•Students are recommended to do some work every day instead of wait until the due
dates, because they will NOT be able to work on the assignments if the related lecture
videos and reading assignments are not completed.
Equal Access for All Students: Dr. Michael Drake, the UC president, publicly supports all students
regardless of immigration status. He has also made a commitment to support and protect students and
their families. If you feel that you need any kind of assistance as you are affected by either your
immigration status or a loved one (family member, parents, friends, partner) feel free to contact the
UCI DREAM Center.
Basic Needs Security: Any student who faces challenges securing sufficient food or housing and
believes this may affect their performance in the course is urged to contact the Dean of Students for
support. Other resources available at UCI:
• Student Outreach and Retention Center (SOAR)
• SOAR Basic Needs Hub & Food Pantry
• Furthermore, please notify the professor if you are comfortable doing so, so that she can assist
with securing resources.
