For the past few weeks, Mr. Grande was not getting enough sleep as he
worried about Ms. Mendoza. Ms. Mendoza has been a Math Teacher at Bantayan
Elementary School for more than 40 years. To some extent she is considered to be
a legend in their town just because of her years of service and good reputation. In
the middle of the lecture while discussing about addition of fractions last Friday
she suddenly stopped, picked up her things and then just left the classroom 20
minutes before the class ends. One week earlier, Mr. Grande found her in the
library, reading and said that she became unaware of the time that she was not able
to appear in her fifth period class. Ironically, she is slowing down, but still refuses
to consider retirement. She always insists that she is more needed there and
dislikes any mention of leaving. She has trouble in properly identifying students
that she mismanages the attendance records. Moreover, she is late to school almost
every day and Mr. Grande must look for other teachers to cover for her class.
On ten different occasions, she reported that her handbag was stolen only to
find out that it was left behind in the staff restroom, faculty room or Principal’s
office. Ms. Mendoza has never received an unsatisfactory evaluation therefore Mr.
Grande is now documenting these incidents. Also, he has already started to pay a
visit in her classroom more regularly although she has responded with annoyance.
Besides, she told him the other day,” An administrator, especially a former student,
could be a little more sensitive to an older staff member."
What is more to these problems is that rest of the faculties are being
protective of Ms. Mendoza and not supportive of Mr. Grande. Although it is not
that hard for him to document what is happening, it is difficult for him to find a
way on how to ease her out with respect and dignity knowing it could take years to
get her to retire. What will happen to the students? Certain people advise Mr.
Grande to just get rid of her knowing that it is not that simple.
