Activity - Are particles of matter continuously moving?
Experiment - Take two glasses/beakers filled with water.
Put a drop of blue or red ink slowly and carefully along the
sides of the first beaker and honey in the same way in the
second beaker.Leave them undisturbed in your house or in a
corner of the class.
Activity - Are particles of matter continuously moving?
Observation - Blue/ red ink will spread out in water evenly
within few minutes so the water becomes blue/ red in colour
while honey takes some hours to spread completely.

When kept in different jars sugar/ salt take the shape of the
jar. Are they solid?
Time
Properties of the Gaseous State
Gases have neither fixed shape nor fixed volume. They
occupy the shape and volume of the container in which they
are filled. Gases are highly compressible as compared to
solids and liquids. Gases also have property to flow so
known as fluids.
Piston
Gas
Rubber Cork
Activity - Compressibility of matter
Observation - In the case of air, the piston of the syringe is
more compressed. In case of water, slightly compressible
whereas in case of chalk it is not compressible.

1. Solid, as ice,
2. Liquid, as the familiar water, and
3. Gas, as water vapour.
Hence, Matter can change its state by applying factors like
Temperature and Pressure.

What is the effect of change of temperature on solid?
On increasing the temperature of solids, the kinetic energy
of the particles increases. Due to the increase in kinetic
energy, the particles start vibrating with greater speed.
The energy supplied by heat overcomes the forces of
attraction between the particles. The particles leave their
fixed positions and start moving more freely.A stage is
reached when the solid melts and is converted to a liquid.

What is the effect of change of pressure on gases?
Temperature in Kelvin can get by adding 273 to the temperature in the celsius scale.
