What’s More

1. The volume of the sphere is

Given

So,

Take the average of the volume:

Take the uncertainty:

Therefore

2.

Then,
To write it into uncertainty, first we take the average of the power:

and then the uncertainty is

Therefore,

3.
Intially the car is at rest ie its initial velocity u = 0 m/s

It accelerates with an acceleration a = (6.5 ± 0.5) m/s

What velocity v does it achieve in a displacement = (100 ± 1) m

Using the formula

v² = u² + 2 a s = 2 a s ——————(1)

v² = 2 × 6.5 × 100 = 1300 m²/s²

Or

v = 10√13 m/s = 36.06 m/s

Taking log of both sides of (1) we get

2 log v = log 2 + log a + log s

Differentiating

2 (∆v/v) = 0 + (∆ a/a) + (∆ s/s)

2 (∆v/v) = (0.5/6.5) + (1/100) = 1/13 + 1/100 = 0.07 + 0.01 = 0.08 = 8%

The error in velocity would not be halved but would be just 8%.

∆ v = 10√13 × (0.08) =( 4√13)/5 = 2.88 m/s

So

v ± ∆ v = (36. 1 ± 2.9) m/s.

Additional Activities
QUANTITY DIMENSION UNCERTAINTY UNITS
Length 140 ± 0.3 cm
Width 84 ± 0.3 cm
Height 14 ± 0.4 cm

Length

Width

3. A=LxW
= 140 cm x 84 cm = 11, 760 cm2

High A: LxW

= 140.3 cm2 x 84.3 cm2 = 11, 827.29; d=67.3

Low A: L x W
4. A= 11,760 cm2 ± 67 cm2
 Uncertainty of the area is lowered by 2 inches
67 cm2 – 13cm2 = 54cm2

11,760 cm2 ± 54 cm2

 Using the nominal value add and subtract the uncertainty
11,760 + 67 = 11,827 cm2
11, 760 – 67 = 11,693 cm2
 Obtaining the values of uncertainty; A=LxW
 140.4 x 84.2 = 11,821.6 → 11,822 (0.4 is the maximum
uncertainty allowance for the length and width)
 139 .7 x 83.7= 11,692.8 → 11,693 (0.4 is the maximum
uncertainty allowance for the length and width)

∴ 0.4 cm is the maximum uncertainty allowance for length and width to

attain the area of 11,760 cm2 ± 67 cm2

5. V = LxWxH
= 140 x 84 x14 = 164,640 cm3
High V = LxWxH
= 140.3 x 84.3 x 14.3 = 169,130.2 cm3; d=4,490 cm3
Low V LxWxH
= 139.7 x 83.7 x 13.7 = 160,192.5 cm3; 4,447 cm3

164,640 cm3 ± 4,447 cm3
