Is the United States of America – “DEAD”?

he bottom line is that
the USA and most of
the individual States
have run out of money, unem-
ployment and under-employ-
ment by all accounts is at least

Just pulled a muscle? By Dr. Glenn Foss

M
ost people have expe-
rienced the discomfort
of a back or neck
strain. More often than not
these "pulled" muscles seem to
occur for no apparent reason
and when we least expect them:
bending over to tie a shoelace, or
getting out of the car. The in-
evitable question is, "Why did
this happen?" Except in cases of
trauma, muscle injuries rarely
happen by themselves. In fact,
a "pulled" muscle (or muscle
strain) is usually the result of an
undiagnosed problem of spinal
malposition and joint dysfunc-
tion, what Chiropractic doctors
identify as spinal subluxation.
Muscles move joints. If a
particular joint is not function-
ing correctly due to abnormal
spinal position, the muscles
pulling across the joint are
forced to work harder and subse-
quently fatigue faster. Joints are
surrounded by specialized nerve
endings, which become irritated
when a joint is not aligned or
functioning correctly. Muscle
fatigue and nerve irritation
cause shortening and increased
tonicity (tension) in the muscle
fibres. The affected muscle is
then predisposed to injury, as re-
peated use of the body part
steadily raises the muscle tone
towards a threshold level.
Once the threshold is
reached, the next action the
muscle is asked to make, how-
ever simple, results in a sus-
tained, involuntary protective
muscle spasm. This phenome-
non is called facilitation.
This form of facilitation,
due to spinal subluxation, is not
only correctable if it does occur,
but in most cases is easily pre-
vented. Your doctor of chiroprac-
tic specializes in the detection
and correction of spinal sublux-
ation. Through specific spinal
adjustments, he or she can help
reduce the immediate pain symp-
toms, and more importantly, cor-
rect the underlying abnormal
spinal position and joint mechan-
ics. However, early detection of
such spinal problems can be cru-
cial in helping to prevent back
and neck spasms from first occur-

pets will have ‘worms’ at some
point in their lifetime. These
worms are most commonly
seen in puppies and kittens but
any age animal is susceptible,
even a pet that never goes
outside. Roundworms, hook-
worms, whipworms, giardia
and coccidia are the most
common culprits of these in-
fections. Routine de-wormings
and fecal examinations are
the mainstays of identifica-

not shed in stools, making

owner difficult. However, the
eggs of these worms are pres-
ent, though they are shed in-
termittently. These eggs are

Parasite Council’s guidelines
recommend fecal examina-
tions two to four times during
the first year of life and one to
kittens through infected milk
from the mother. Round-
worms can cause diarrhea,
vomiting, and the potbelly
appearance seen in many
puppies. Roundworms do
pose a significant risk to hu-
mans. Contact with contami-
nated soil or feces can result
in human ingestion and in-
fection. Children are more
vulnerable to exposure be-
cause they are more likely to
put dirt or other objects into
their mouths. Roundworms
in humans can cause fever,
lung and liver damage and
and can rapidly cause anemia
and sometimes black, tarry
stools. Hookworm larvae can
infect humans by penetrating
the surface of a person's skin,
typically through bare
feet. This results in itchiness
at the point where the larvae
enter the skin and visible
tracks on the skin from the
worm’s migration called 'cuta-
neous larva migrans'.
Whipworms only infect
our dogs and not cats. The
worms are passed in the feces
and can cause bloody diarrhea
in dogs. The biggest issue
worming and prevention is as
follows: Administer de-
wormer to puppies at 2, 4, 6
and 8 weeks of age, followed
by administration of a
monthly preventive. Adm-
inister biweekly de-wormer
treatment to kittens between
3 and 9 weeks of age, followed
by administration of a
monthly preventive. Admin-
ister year-round treatment
with a heartworm preventive
that has broad- spectrum ac-
tivity against intestinal para-

that could possibly ruin such a
day is seeing weeds.
Some weeds are just mis-
placed garden plants. For in-
stance, take dandelions. They
were brought to North America
by pioneer gardeners who
missed eating spring greens.
After getting through a cold
New England or Midwestern
winter, they needed to eat fresh
salads again. They couldn't just
go to the store and get fresh let-
tuce like we do, and they
needed the vitamins C and E
that are in spring greens.
Almost entirely edible,
dandelions are high in beta-
carotene, potassium and iron.
The leaves are best early before
the plant goes into bloom. The
flowers can be seasoned with
salt, pepper and flour and fried
in butter. The roots can be
sauteed in a little oil. The leaves
can also be used in tea, while
the flowers can be used to make
wine. Now, if we could just keep
this plant in the garden and out
of the lawn.
Chicory (Cichorium inty-
bus) has true blue flowers that
are hard to find in most plants.
Like dandelions, chicory is a
multiuse plant that came to our
gardens from the Mediterranean
area of Europe. The leaves are
eaten early in the spring, but
they are bitter -- it is one of the
traditional bitter herbs of the
Jewish Passover. The flowers
can be used fresh or candied. For
the roots, saute or dry and roast
to make a beverage like coffee.
It is used as an additive to cof-
fee in many parts of the world,
including New Orleans. The

titled "Stalking the Wild As-

will see there are edible parts to
many plants that we call weeds.
Cattails, mallow, wild dock,
purslane, chickweed and even
pine trees have edible parts.

Shortcuts for fast weeknight meals

ost people are busy
balancing family life
and careers. This can
make mealtime challenging.
Sometimes it seems easier to go
through the drive-through lane
of the nearest fast-food restaurant
than to spend time in the
kitchen. But making dinner does-
n't have to be time-consuming or
difficult.
Arriving home from work
at 6:30 p.m. and then thinking
about making dinner leaves
many people feeling stressed
out. It is possible to create
healthy meals the entire family
will enjoy with planning and
smart time management in the
kitchen.
Here are some tips that
can make for easier meals in a
snap.
•Mark the calendar. Sure it may

Potatoes do double duty in
Irish stew By Chris Ross
O
ne of my fondest
childhood food mem-
ories is my mom's
meal of corned beef and cab-
bage, served with new potatoes
drenched in butter and parsley.
With Irish ancestors on both
sides of the family tree, St.
Patrick's Day was a time for
good food and good stories at
our house. But it turns out that
corned beef and cabbage is
really an Irish-American tradi-
tion, not one that would be
commonly served in Ireland.
So, in looking around for
an Irish dish to mark the oc-
casion this year, I happened
upon this Irish Stew in "Joy of
Cooking." In Ireland, it would
be called Lamb Stew, and
there are many variations of
the recipe.
This one uses potatoes
two different ways. First, po-
tatoes are sliced so that they
break down and serve as a
thickening agent, then more
potatoes are halved so that
they cook just enough to be
tender, as an important com-
ponent to the stew.
And in this recipe, the
meat is not browned before
it's added to the stew.
IRISH STEW
2 tablespoons vegetable
oil or butter
2 medium onions,
chopped
3 pounds boneless lamb
stew meat, cut into 1-
inch cubes, or 3 pounds
lamb shoulder chops
2 teaspoons fresh thyme
or 3/4 teaspoon dried
thyme
Salt and black pepper, to
taste
2 medium boiling pota-
toes, peeled and sliced
3 cups chicken stock or
broth; or dark stout
