Father of Jose Rizal who was the youngest of 13 offsprings of Juan and Cirila Mercado. Born in Biñan, Laguna on April 18, 1818. Studied in San Jose College, Manila. He got married to Teodora Alonzo on June 28, 1848 His father is called to be “haciendero”, “mercado” and capitanes of the town which they were born. Rizal described his father as “a model of fathers”. He was a tenant of a Dominican estate in Calamba, Laguna and through hard work, he had increased his rented landholdings. Teodora Morales Alonzo Reolanda y Quintos
Mother of Jose Rizal who was the second child of Lorenzo Alonso and Brijida de Quintos. She studied at the Colegio de Santa Rosa in Manila. She was 20 years old when she married Francisco Mercado of Biñan, Laguna in 1848. She was born in Santa Cruz, Manila on November 14, 1827 and died in 1913 in Manila. She was a business-minded woman, disciplinarian, courteous, religious, well-read and hard-working mother. At a very early age, she taught her children how to read. She taught them discipline, justice, and compassion. Most important of all, she taught her children to treat Indios as equals.
