8.2.13 Damage Factor for Major Axle Configuration on National Highway


N-10
As discussed in section 2.5.5, damage factors or load equivalency factors have been
calculated using following two approaches, i-e AASHTO 1993 and Road Note 40. The
average damage factors calculated for major axle configuration are presented in
Table 8-28.

The average damaging factors at each station along National Highway N-10 are
tabulated in Table 8-29. The results provide a comprehensive description of locations
where maximum overloading is being followed and vice versa. The results will help in
pavement design for rehabilitation and maintenance of existing roadway and for new
one.

8.2.14 Tire Pressure Measurements on National Highway N-10


The tires of overloaded vehicles are over-inflated far in excess of their normal
pressure. The Consultants site teams have checked tire pressure of each truck
weighed during the survey. The average tire pressure value of front and rear axles of
trucks plying on National Highway N-10 is listed in Table 8-30.

8.3 National Highway N-15


The National Highway N-15 is located in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, in the
north-west of Pakistan, with a total length of 240 km. Its total length is divided into
175 km in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the remaining 65 km in the Northern areas. It is
often used as a bypass for the N-35 (KKH) and connects Mansehra with Chilas. N-15
is also very popular among tourists who visit Naran and the surrounding areas. The
results of axle load survey performed on National Highway N-15 are discussed in
subsequent sub-sections.

8.3.1 Distribution of Vehicles by Axle Configuration on National

8.3.2 Analysis by Axle Configuration on National Highway N-15


The statistical analysis comprising minimum, maximum and average loads per axle
carried by trucks of major axle configuration along with standard deviation and
variance is presented in Table 8-32. The minimum, maximum and average loads are
graphically presented in Figure 8-18 and Figure 8-19 respectively.

8.3.3 Load Spectrum by Axle Configuration on National Highway N-15


The axle load survey data was organized in a way to identify the number of vehicles
carrying load above and below permissible limits. Furthermore, load spectrums were
identified and number of vehicles carrying load in specified spectrums were
calculated. The results are tabulated in Table 8-33. The percentage of trucks for
major axle configuration carrying load above and below permissible limits is
graphically presented in Figure 8-20.

8.3.4 Rear Axle Load Spectrum (Single) on National Highway N-15


The damaging effect of front axle on pavement structure is negligible. The rear axles
including single, tandem and tridem have significant effect on the road deterioration.
The spectrum of rear axle loads (single) for all axle configurations is presented in
Table 8-34.
