Chemistry Risk Assessment

Functional Materials Laboratory, Department of Chemistry, GC University Lahore

Research Laboratory 1, Department of Chemistry, GC University Lahore
Supervisors: Dr Raja Shahid Ashraf (rajashahid@gcu.edu.pk), Dr Muhammad Altaf (muhammad.altaf@gcu.edu.pk)
Date of assessment: September 2019 Review date: September 2020

What is the hazard(s) or

hazardous activity? Waste Solvent Disposal
Who may be affected? Students and staff in lab Cleaners Maintenance staff Engineers
Other - state who
How will injury occur? Manual lifting too heavy (over-full) containers and suffering strain etc.
Dropping the full container and suffering crush injuries
Coming into direct contact with waste solvent/chemicals
Solvents are flammable – small fire risk
What is the likely outcome? Back injury or other strain, crush injury, exposure to solvent/chemicals by inhalation
or skin/eye contact.

What control measures are Direct skin/eye contact, inhalation or ingestion with the waste solvent is to be avoided
in place? at all costs.
Safety glasses, lab coats, safety shoes and rubber gloves must be worn at all times.
Charcoal impregnated face mask are available if required.
All acidic materials should be neutralized especially when it is to be placed in steel
hydrocarbon waste drums. Do not seal the drums before the neutralization reaction is
finished. Failure to neutralize can lead to build up of pressure and or corrosion.
Waste solvents from the research areas are collected in 25L plastic drums for
chlorinated (chlorinated solvents will corrode metal drums) and metal recycled 25L
acetone drums for non-chlorinated.
Store solvents away from sources of ignition/heat.
Tackle fire with CO2 extinguisher if safe to do so.
WHAT MIGHT HAPPEN? WHAT EMERGENCY PROCEDURES ARE REQUIRED?
