Title of Literary Piece: The Tale of The Three Brothers
Literary Approach: Formalism
Choose two guide questions for the Literary Approach (see Unit 4 for the
Guide questions).

 How is the work structured or organized? How does it begin? Where

does it go next? How does it end? What is the work’s plot? How is its
plot related to its structure?

The literary piece entitled ‘’The Tale of The Three Brothers’’ is a story that
consists of four main parts, the very first one being the cause of the conflict or
the starting point of the piece itself. Two of the remaining parts of the selection
represents the body as well as the climax, wherein it exhibits the scenarios and
outcomes formed by the conflict that the main characters will have to face.
Lastly, the final part is the resolution; the takeaway of the fiction that is viewed
by numerous perspectives. Furthermore, the literature is orchestrated in a way
that the meaning and lesson of the story develops over time.

Above all else, four of the reoccurring characters are neither protagonists nor
antagonists. These figures may be viewed as good or bad when seen in the right
perspective of their intentions. Now, the plot began with the three brothers facing
the trigger of the conflict itself; Death. After meeting the cunning man, the three
brothers went on with their lives on separate paths; still bearing the objects they
collected from Death. The story ends with all of the brothers dead, wherein
driven by their disagreeable personalities, two of the older brothers met their
painful demise brought out by the gifts of Death; with the youngest being
accepting of the idea of passing with his kind nature. To speak the truth, Death is
not and never will be the source of the downfall of two of the brothers; this is
due to the fact that Antioch and Cadmus are men with rather sour and unpleasant
characteristics. Arrogance, pride, and the such are what started and led them to
their agonizing deaths.

The story is about three brothers who were travelling together with their
magical capabilities there to aid them with anything they need, along the way
they reached a treacherous river; having the abilities the three have, they made a
magical bridge over the river. Halfway across the bridge, they meet the
personification of Death, who is angry for being cheated by three potential
victims. However, being the clever one that he is, Death fabricates praise and
fascination of the three. Thus, granting each a wish as a reward. The eldest,
Antioch asked for a wand with great power; the middle brother, Cadmus asked
for the capability of recalling others from the dead in the means of further
humiliating Death; finally, the youngest named Ignotus, the man wished not to
be tracked by Death. And so, the latter reluctantly gave him a piece of his
invisibility cloak.

The story then progressed wherein all three siblings proceeded on to separate
paths of their own; still bearing the objects they collected from Death. Antioch,
the wielder of the Elder Wand, ended up killed by a thief after carelessly
boasting about the power his wand possesses; thus, Death took him for his own.
Cadmus, an arrogant man and possessor of the Resurrection Stone, found himself
hanging by the neck with his feet suspended in the air after recalling the woman
he wished to marry from the dead; only to find a sad and cold expression. The
woman was suffering for she did not belong in the mortal world; hence, the
second oldest brother killed himself to join his beloved thus Death collected
Cadmus for his own as well. Lastly, after many years of searching for the
youngest brother, Death finally found him old and frail but happy with the life he
had after shedding the invisibility cloak Death gave him; thus, Ignotus greeted
Death like an old friend and obliged in following him to the afterlife as equals.

The plot and structure of the literary piece are what we call ''two peas in a
pod''. Without the other, the whole thing would be quite hard to comprehend; in
other words, it would be a mess. The two elements are related for they aid each
other in explaining the progression of the story. The piece expressed great
contrast and collaboration of both the plot and its structure. Throughout the
selection, the plot never swayed from how it is organized; ultimately creating not
only a masterpiece of a work, but a vast development in all aspects of the story.

 What is the relationship of each part of the work to the work as a

whole? How are the parts related to one another?

Each part of the story plays a significant role in the progression of the plot.
Without the coordination of each, the piece as a whole would be in disorder. The
conflict, body, climax, and resolution work in such a way that when all elements
are combined, we have astounding literary pieces such as this as a result.

Delving back into the selected fiction: ''The Tale of The Three Brothers'', its
plot begins with a somewhat introductory entrance that immediately transitions
with the conflict. It starts with introducing the three brothers of their magic and
how they cheated Death; with Death and his gifts being a personified form of
karma or a reflection of each brother. The next part is the body of the story; two
of the older brothers' demise became a cunning form of irony, with Death's gifts
becoming nothing but a medium to their passing and their sour attitudes as well
as personalities becoming the main reason from the very beginning. The very last
part, the resolution; the youngest brother, Death's final victim, was quite hard to
find. Being the humble man that he is, sought for nothing but a peaceful life to
live; and he lived it happily. The resolution reverts to the very first part of the
piece where Death gave each brother a gift that reflects each of them accurately;
the invisibility cloak he received mirrored the humble yet content life that he
had. With that, his time came, and he gladly welcomed Death like an old friend.
