Mediterranean and DASH Tie for Top Spot in Recent Ranking

Each year, U.S. News & World Report releases a ranking of popular diets—assessed by a panel of health
experts based on seven categories, including weight loss, nutrition, safety, and ease of compliance.

Topping 2018’s list of “best diets overall” is a tie between the Mediterranean and DASH Diets, which
received high marks for being healthy and easy to follow, and potentially effective for weight loss in both
the short- and long-term.

“No single diet works for everybody, but the DASH and the Mediterranean diets have the strongest
biological underpinning, and also have been tested in the largest and longest studies,” says Dr. Eric
Rimm, Professor of Epidemiology and Nutrition at the Harvard Chan School of Public Health, who served as
one of 25 panelists for the 2018 ranking. “I’m glad the other panelists agreed with me since it is not always
the case that nutrition experts agree!”

Other popular diets—such as those that involve fasting or severe dietary restrictions—fell lower on the list,
with the Ketogenic Diet ranking last. Although these and other diets may result in short-term weight loss,
many were rated as difficult to follow, which factored into lower scores for weight loss in the long term.

“Some diets that fell further down the list have only been tested short term, and should really be considered
prescriptions—not long-term lifestyle solutions” says Rimm. “Choosing a diet that is both healthy and easy
for you to follow is crucial for lasting results.”

Remember that even if a particular diet may result in weight loss for one person, it may not be effective for
another due to individual differences in genes and lifestyle. And while research shows that calories matter,
focusing on food quality is an equally important part of the equation for preventing weight gain and
promoting weight loss.

2. IDENTIFIES THE GRAMMATICAL STRUCTURES LEARNED IN UNIT 1 WITHIN THE TEXT.

In the previous text we can see that there are factors that help us locate some phrases or words that are
related to grammar, in English there is much to talk about based on grammar and we can find from simple
topics as more advanced topics but in This time we can only identify some connectors, prepositions,
adverbs, comparatives and well in most of the time we will be able to find pronouns as adjectives and this
time it was not the exception.
3.- WRITE AN OPINION ABOUT THE ARTICLE AND COMPARE IT WITH A DIET OF YOUR
CHOICE. (MAXIMUM TWO PARAGRAPHS)

As mentioned in the text, diets for many aspects are published every year and I find this very interesting
since people who want to have a healthy lifestyle can have reliable scientific information at their disposal
through these publications. I find it very interesting because people who want to have a healthy lifestyle
can have reliable scientific information available to them through these publications, thus being able to
identify which type of diet is best suited to their goals and their energetic conditions. I believe that both
the DASH diet and the Mediterranean diet deserve to be at the top of this ranking because the DASH
diet is low in salt and high in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low-fat dairy and lean protein. The diet was
originally created to help reduce high blood pressure. It is also a healthy way to lose weight, as well The
DASH diet helps you eat nutritious foods. It's not just a traditional low-salt diet. The DASH diet
emphasizes foods rich in calcium, potassium, magnesium and fiber, which when combined, help lower
blood pressure. The Mediterranean diet is one of the healthy eating plans recommended by the Dietary
Guidelines for Americans to promote health and prevent chronic disease, combining the basics of
healthy eating with the traditional flavors and cooking methods of the Mediterranean, the Mediterranean
diet is a type of diet based on the traditional cuisine of the countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea.
Although there is no single definition of the Mediterranean diet, it is usually rich in vegetables, fruits,
whole grains, beans, nuts and seeds, and olive oil.

Based on the information in the text, I find it interesting to compare the MIND diet, since the MIND diet is
a hybrid of the Mediterranean diet and the DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diet. Both
diets are based on a growing body of research suggesting that certain nutrients, found primarily in foods
derived from plants, whole grains, beans, nuts, vegetable oils and fish, help protect brain cells while
fighting inflammation and oxidation. The MIND diet recommends two servings of vegetables every day;
the Canadian diet recommends five and requires at least three servings of whole grains a day. The
MIND diet's eating plan combines the vegetable- and olive oil-laden foods of the Mediterranean diet with
the low-saturated fat, low-sugar foods of the DASH diet. Both of these diets have already been
associated with improved heart health and cancer prevention, and their benefits can certainly help brain
health as well. Thus obtaining distinctive characteristics of a better diet as it includes balance,
maintainability, palatability, sustainability, and is healthy, so the longer this type of diet is included in the
day to day, the greater the benefits and the greater the protection we can expect in relation to diseases
such as Alzheimer's and many others. Adapting it to one's own eating style, making the necessary
changes and making it part of one's lifestyle, can make a big difference in achieving better health and a
healthy brain for the rest of our lives. However, it is important to mention that in addition to following
either of these diets, it is advisable to exercise 30 minutes a day, most days of the week. The important
thing is to have a total of at least 2 hours and 30 minutes per week of activities at a moderate intensity
level, performing aerobic exercise to help prevent weight gain.
