Introduction to Criminology
First Semester, AY 2020 – 2021

PHILOSOPHY

The BS Criminology graduates are expected to become globally competent, innovative, and socially and ethically responsible. Thus, to
foster the values of leadership, integrity, accountability and responsibility while serving their fellowmen, community and country. Moreover, the
graduates are also expected to perform well on their careers in crime prevention, law enforcement, scientific crime detection and correctional
administration. Lastly, graduates are expected and always encourage to write research and inquiry on the nature, causes treatment or punishment of
criminal behavior and how criminal justice agencies respond to crime, criminals and victims thus, to respect the constitutional rights of all men quality
liberty and justice.

1. Conduct criminological research on crimes, crimes causation, victims and offenders to include deviant behavior.
2. Produce graduates who are equipped with academic, scientific, technological knowledge and skills in preparation for careers in crime
prevention, law enforcement, scientific crime investigation and detection, and correctional administration
3. Provide, opportunity, instruction and guided experience by which the students learn the basic knowledge and acquire the skills essential to the
practice of criminology

Course Title : Introduction to Criminology
No of Units : 3 units

Contact Hours : 5 hours per week (2 hrs lecture / 3 hrs lab)


Course Description:
This course presents an overview of the different schools of thought in criminology theories that explain criminal behavior; techniques for measuring the
characteristics of criminals, crime and victims; the interrelatedness of theory, policy, and practice in the criminal justice system; and , current issues and studies in criminology.
Introduction to Criminology is a course deals with the overview of the study of crimes; its causes and control, the criminals and the factors of criminal behavior including
approaches of their treatments. It includes the study of the factors that precipitate crime repression, criminal etiology or the predisposing factors and producing elements of crime. It
adds also the analysis of the social, psychological, and mental make up of criminals and the victims, and the role of correction as a pillar in the criminal justice system.

The course includes an introduction in the field of Criminalistics, Investigation, Law and Law Enforcement Administration – the major areas in criminal justice educationwhich are in
accordance with CHED MEMOs and the PRC syllabi.

3. Relate the early schools of criminology with its modern trend in criminology education;
4. Explain the crime theories and causation
5. Determine the concepts of crime causation and penology how its effects to crime situation in the Philippines;
6. Classify crimes typology and explain the contribution of the victims and victimology in crime events;
7. Discuss significant provisions of R.A 6506 and R.A 11131 in the practice of criminology profession in the Philippines; and identify
current issues in the study of criminology.
