5 TIPS TO GET MORE POINTS FOR GRAMMATICAL RANGE

for Speaking & Writing

 Grammatical Range is one of the evaluation criteria for speaking & writing.
 You should use a variety of grammatical structures to get high mark.
 You shouldn’t overuse the same grammar. Avoid repeating the same structures.

SUPERLATIVE + BY FAR

= con diferencia

I worked my way through the university and I think it was by far the
most difficult thing I have done in my life. (B1)

Quite frankly, I never fell behind with my studies and met all the
deadlines in an exemplary manner and I consider this by far my best
achievement. (B2)

THE MORE + S + V, THE MORE + S + V

The more time one dedicates to studying, the easier it becomes to pass
their exam. (B1-B2)

USED TO (PAST & PRESENT)

= solía & suelo

I have to admit that when I was a child I used to play games outside, I
sometimes ended up with some minor injuries. (used to in the past) (B1)

When I was a child, I have to admit, I used to play hide and seek and
other games outside and occasionally ended up with some cuts and
bruises. Nowadays, I am as fit as fiddle and, ofcourse, I am not used to
doing it anymore. (used to in the past and present) (B2)
 Pay attention to vocabulary. Range of vocabulary is another criteria and when
talking about a specific topic, you should use expressions which are typical for
this topic. For example, in TIP 1 we use vocabulary on education, in TIP 2 on
books etc. Thematic expressions have been marked in green for you to see.

CONDITIONALS

If the air quality was better, many people would stop having problems
with their lungs. (2nd conditional) (B1)

If the government paid more attention to endangered species and how

the climate change affects them, everything would be better. In fact, if
they had done this a few years ago, a great deal of elephants wouldn’t
have died out in Africa. (Combination of 2nd and 3rd Conditionals) (B2)

MODALS: MUST (LOGICAL ASSUMPTION) & COULD, MIGHT, MAY

(SPECULATION)

= debe & podría

I love reading books, even if they are difficult. In fact, I could tell you the
story of many bestsellers in every detail. (possibility in present) (B1)

I am a big reader, even if what I read is heavy-going. Actually, I could tell

you the story of a great number of page turners in every single detail.
Though, I might have spent less time on this peculiar hobby and study a
bit more instead. (possibility in present & past) (B2)

This kind of movie must become a box-office hit. Although it was made
with small amount of money, the setting and the actors are really good.
