To attain the effectiveness of the “Modified Words of the Week”, the intervention is

supported by the 12 Principles of Language Learning and Teaching by H. Douglas Brown

(2001). Brown is a notable linguist professor and has published many articles and books on

second language acquisition and pedagogy, including Principles of Language Learning and

Teaching which are categorized into three: cognitive principles, affective principles, and

linguistic principles. For the cognitive principles, the activity should be utilized consistently

before the start of class discussion. Recapitulation of all the words that have been discussed

should be done as supported by the principles of automaticity and strategic investment. To make

it more meaningful for the learners, they were encouraged to use their assigned word in a

sentence based on subject of their interest. For the sake of principles of anticipation of rewards

and intrinsic motivation, the teacher is suggested to provide incentives upon the success of the

student’s performance and give a piece of follow-up advice. For the sake of affective principles,

the learners were entailed to present and speak so that in this manner, their self-confidence is

being further developed. The teacher should orient the learners that it is acceptable to commit

language error since learning the language is about taking a risk; however, immediate feedback

should be applied for the sake of accuracy. Scaffolding by the teachers to the learners regarding

pronunciation and etymology (origin) of the word is crucial because during the process, the

learners are developing their “second identity” as agreed with the principles of language ego and

language-culture connection. The Linguistic Principles of this activity lies on the hand of the

teacher since he serves as the facilitator of learning. Interlanguage is being applied if the teacher

ensures the participation and feedback of the whole class so that all ideas are collaboratively

being processed. The learners will further achieve the understanding of the word by allowing

them to translate and connect the concept of the word to their first language to attain the
principles of native language effect. Lastly, after knowing all aspects of the word, the learners

should be able to use it for effective communication in authentic contexts to attain the

communicative competence principle. Careful compliance on the steps and taking

recommendations supported by 12 Principles of Language Learning and Teaching by Brown

mentioned above will lead to the success.
