Assignment #2

Direction: Write samples of MISTAKES regarding these rules that you usually observe.
Give two example sentences for each rule. Then, identify from among these rules the
ones that you are guilty of not following. On which occasion did it happen? How did you
write it?

RULES OF THE FORMAL LANGUAGE REGISTER

 Do not use contractions

Samples of Mistakes (X)
1. Participants in the 2020 National Schools Press Conference can't wait for the results
of their respective categories.
2. If you want to reach your dream job, you've to keep that burning passion alive
throughout the process until you get what you desired.

Sentence 1: can’t instead of cannot

Sentence 2: you’ve instead of you have

When I was a junior high school student, I usually commit this mistake to shorten
my writings. During those days, I am not yet aware of the rules in formal writing.
Besides, I can still remember that my English teacher highlighted my grammatical
errors, including the contractions in my essay, like haven’t instead of have not or
they’ve instead of they have. From that moment, I told myself to learn the appropriate
formal writing rules. But, honestly speaking, I feel guilty for not following this rule even
though I knew it already during my Senior High School education. It is because there
are still times that I forgot to apply this rule because of the influence of the verbal type
of communication where I can just say can’t instead of cannot or who’s instead of who
is. But, with the guidance of my teachers, I realized that oral and written communication
has its own rules that you need to be familiarized with to become an effective
communicator.
 Avoid abbreviations and acronyms
Samples of Mistakes (X)
1. PAG-ASA has announced that the typhoon will make its first landfall on the Forbidden
Island within the next twelve hours.
2. Carlos Grino, SVP of Audio-Visual Company, will provide a full scholarship to
deserving graduating students from Cebu Province's public senior high schools.

You can only abbreviate a word/phrase or use its acronym once you have spelled already
the complete word in your writing.

For example:
Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration
(PAG-ASA) has announced that the typhoon will make its first landfall on the Forbidden
Island within the next twelve hours. PAG-ASA also added that everyone must be vigilant
to save oneself and others.

PAG-ASA
Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration
SVP
Senior Vice President

During the 2018 - National Disaster Resilience Month, our school conducted
different activities, where I joined the essay writing competition. During the contest proper,
the teacher-proctor instructed us that we have only one hour to finish our essay. After
that, I submitted my work and waited for the results. When the results are out,
unexpectedly, I was one of the students who made it to the top ten. Then, I received my
essay paper with the score and a comment from one of the judges. The judge commented
that I should write the full name of the word/organization and not just its acronym. It will
make it easier for the reader to understand what you have written. Also, the judge gives
input on how to write an essay effectively. I reviewed my entry and discovered that I only
write the acronyms of the department/council/agency mentioned in my essay paper.
Instead of writing its complete name, I only write its acronyms such as NDRRMC, PAG-
ASA, DND, and PHIVOLCS. From that mistake, I learned new knowledge that I can use
to become a better communicator.
