WhirlFloc

Product Information

WhirlFloc is a purified and standardised form of sea weed extract. It is

manufactured exclusively for use in the breweries as a wort fining agent. It is
/
classified as a process aid , as it is absent in finished beer.

Packaging

 WhirlFloc is packed in polythene liner bags placed in HDPE drums of 25 kgs

each.

Storage & Handling

 Should be stored in a cool & dry place.

 Should be maintained between 25 to 30 deg. C and protected from variations in
temperature.
 Drums should be handled carefully to minimise creation of dust.

Application Dose Rates

WhirlFloc is used at 20 to 60 ppm depending on wort. Once the optimum

concentration has been established, the calculated weight of WhirlFloc is added to
the wort in the copper, 5-10 minutes before casting.

Mode of action

The carrageenan polymers are very large negatively charged molecules. They
complex with positively charged wort proteins, lipids and alpha-glucans, forming
tightly bound electrically neutral aggregates. These aggregates sediment out of the
wort rapidly to form a dense compact trub.

Stability

WhirlFloc powder can be kept for an indefinite period if stored under cool and dry

Chemical nature : Natural Grade Kappa Carrageenan

3. HAZARDS IDENTIFICATION
Exposure to any kind of dust is potentially harmful. Avoid inhalation and contact
with eyes and skin.

4. FIRST AID MEASURES

Inhalation – remove from exposure. If irritation persists or allergic response
develops consult a doctor.
Skin contact – wash skin with plenty of water.
Contact with eyes – irrigate eyes with cold water for 20-min atleast. Obtain
medical advice if irritation occurs.
Ingestion – rinse mouth thoroughly with water and drink plenty of water
afterwards. Consult a doctor.

5. FIRE FIGHTING MEASURES

Not applicable. Amorphous powder will not support combustion.

6. HANDLING & STORAGE

Drums and bags should be kept closed and in a dry place. Use local exhaust
ventilation and/or personal protective equipment as necessary to minimise
exposure.

7. EXPOSURE CONTROLS / PERSONAL PROTECTION

Handle in well ventilated conditions in accordance with good industrial hygiene
and safety practices.
 Wear suitable overalls.
 Wear suitable gloves and eye protection.
 No eating, drinking or smoking in the work place.
 Practice good personal hygiene.
 Avoid inhalation of dust.

Wear suitable respiratory protective equipment if working in confined places with

inadequate ventilation or whenever there is any risk of the exposure limits being
exceeded.

9. STABILITY AND REACTIVITY

Stable. No drop in activity has been found for one year when stored under the
specified conditions.

10. TOXICOLOGICAL INFORMATION

Repeated inhalation of dust may cause sensitisation and will cause allergic type
reactions in sensitised individuals. Prolonged skin contact may cause irritation.

11. ECOLOGICAL INFORMATION

Product has no adverse effect on the environment .
