 Editorial
It is with utmost pleasure that the Ethiopian Embassy in Kenya and its staff
extend their very best wishes for the upcoming New Ethiopian Calendar
Year 2014 to all Ethiopians, people of Ethiopian origin and friends of
Ethiopia in Kenya, Malawi, Seychelles and the Comoros.
For our country Ethiopia, the last quarter of the 2013 Ethiopian Fiscal Year
has been one of tremendous success on several accounts. Parallel to these
stellar achievements, our country also faced certain challenges that called
for a concerted efforts of Ethiopians, People of Ethiopian-origin and Friends
of Ethiopia from all over the world to overcome them. In spite of the
challenges, it was a very fruitful for Ethiopia. During this time, Ethiopia
conducted the historic, 6th General Elections in a free, fair, peaceful and
democratic manner in spite of the COVID 19 pandemic borne challenges.
The second filling of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) was
also conducted successfully as per the schedule. It was also a time in which
Ethiopians and the Ethiopian Diaspora at large showed unwavering
support to the construction of the GERD Project, the humanitarian response
of the Government of Ethiopia in the Tigray region as well as the Ethiopian
National Defence Forces (ENDF) in its endeavours to quell the terrorist TPLF
junta and restore law and order to the region and above all, defend the
territorial integrity and sovereignty of the Nation.
On the bilateral front, Ethiopia and Kenya renewed their commitments to
closely work together on realization of the aspirations of the People of the
two countries in economic cooperation. Cooperation on the Lamu Port-
South Sudan-Ethiopia (LAPSSET), the commissioning of the Moyale One-
Stop-Border-Post (OSBP) and the entry of Safaricom PLC and other Kenyan
companies into the Ethiopian market are the hallmarks of a bilateral
relations that is destined to benefit not only the people of Ethiopia and
Kenya but also the region.
On the other hand, the treacherous attacks and provocations of the TPLF
junta despite the Government’s declaration of a unilateral humanitarian
ceasefire continues to wreak havoc on hapless civilians, especially women
and children, not just in the Tigray region but also the neighbouring
regional states of Amhara and Afar. Eritrean refugees located Tigray
region were also not exempt from the terrorist enterprise’s penchant for
gross crimes against humanity. As a result of its continued attacks a massive
humanitarian crisis looms large in Tigray, Amhara and Afar regions. The
wanton attacks by the TPLF in those regions left more than 300, 000
civilians displaced and many dead. The unfair, vitriolic and orchestrated
attacks by Western media against a country of over 100 million people
instead of helping the situation through professional, fact-based reporting
exacerbated the matter due proliferation of fake news and disinformation.
In spite of the myriad impediments our country faced, it traversed this
period by capitalizing the positive success stories in the political, economic,
judicial and military reforms and regional economic integration projects,
chiefly LAPSSET and OSBP, with our strategic neighbour, Kenya. In this
regard, the tumultuous journey of our beloved country was an inspiring one
of renewal, resilience, hope and prosperity. With these in mind, we
sincerely hope that 2014 E.C. will bring along an unparalleled prospect to
reflect and overcome the challenges and focus on the persevering journey
towards renewal, development and prosperity both at home and beyond.
Calling upon all Ethiopians, people of Ethiopian origin and friends of
Ethiopia, particularly in Kenya and Malawi, from all walks of life to work
in unison to help Ethiopia overcome its challenges and to contribute
towards the realization of the GERD and the humanitarian assistance
operations of the Government and the law enforcement operations of the
ENDF, we wish you all a happy, peaceful, hopeful and prosperous 2014
Ethiopian New Year that will be celebrated on 11 September 2021.

ኢትዮጵያውያን እና የኢትዮጵያ ወዳጆች በሙሉ መጪው የኢትዮጵያ አዲስ
ዓመት 2014 ዓ.ም. መልካም አዲስ ዓመት እንዲሆንላችሁ በኬንያ የኢትዮጵያ
ኤምባሲ እና ባልደረቦች ይመኛሉ።
ያሳለፍነው የ2013 ዓ.ም. አራተኛው ሩብ ዓመት ሀገራችን ብዙ ድሎችን
ያስመዘገበችበት ወቅት ነው። ከነዚህ ስኬቶች ጎን ለጎንም ለመፍታት
የኢትዮጵያውያን፣ ትውልደ-ኢትዮጵያውያን እና አፍቃሪ ኢትዮጵያ ወገኖቻችንን
የተባበረ ክንድ እና እገዛ የጠየቁ የተለያዩ ፈተናዎች ሀገራችንን አጋጥመዋት
አልፈዋል። ሀገራችን የተጋረጡባት ችግሮች ቢኖሩም በርካታ አመርቂ
ውጤቶችን አስመዝግባለች።በዚህ ወቅት ሀገራቸን ኢትዮጵያ ታሪካዊውን 6ኛ
ሀገራው ምርጫ የኮሮና ቫይረስ ወለድ ፈተናዎች ሳይገድቧት ዓለምን ባስደመመ
መልኩ በነጻ፣ ፍትሃዊ፣ ሰላማዊ እና ዲሞክራሲያዊ መንገድ አካሂዳለች። የታላቁ
የኢትዮጵያ ህዳሴ ግድብ ሁለተኛ ዙር የውሃ ሙሌትም በተያዘለት ጊዜ ገደብ
መሠረት በስኬት ተጠናቋል።ይህ ጊዜ በመላው ዓለም የሚኖሩ የኢትዮጵያ
ዳያስፖራ አባላት ለህዳሴ ግድብ፣ መንግስት በትግራይ ክልል ለሚያካሂደው
ሰብዓዊ ድጋፍን የማቅረብ እንቅስቃሴ እንዲሁም የሀገር መከላከያ ሠራዊት
አሸባሪውን የህወሃት ቡድን ለመደምሰስ እና በሀገራችንን ሠላምና መረጋጋት

ለመቀጠል ቁርጠኝነታቸውን ያደሱበት ወቅት ነው። ከሁለቱ ሀገራት አልፎ
የቀጠናውን ህዝቦች ተጠቃሚ የሚያደርጉ የላሙ ወደብ ፕሮጀክት፣ የሞያሌ
የአንድ መስኮት የጉሙሩክ አገልግሎት ጣቢያ ተመርቆ መከፈት እና የሳፋሪኮም
እና ሌሎች የኬንያ ኩባንያዎች ወደ ኢትዮጵያ ገበያ መግባት የሁለትዮሽ
ሁለንተናዊ ኢኮኖሚያዊ ውህደቱ ዋናኛ ማሳያዎች ናቸው።ከተለመደው ፖለቲካ
ባለፈ ኢኮኖሚያዊ ጠቀሜታቸው ከፍተኛ ነው።
በሌላ በኩል የህወሃት ጁንታ መንግሰት ያወጀውን የተናጠል ሰብዓዊ የተኩስ
ማቆም ባለመቀበል በትግራይ እና በአጎራባች የአማራ እና አፋር ክልሎች ህዝቦች
በተለይም በህፃናት፣ ወጣቶች እና እናቶች በሚያካሂደው መቋጫ የለሽ ጥቃት
በየቀኑ ይፈጽማል። በትግራይ ክልል የሚገኙ የኤርትራ ስደተኞችም ኢ-ሰብዓዊ
ወንጀሎችን እንደገድል ከሚቆጥረው የትህነግ ሽብር ቡድን ሴራ እና ጥቃት
አላመለጡም። በአሸባሪ ቡድኑ ጠብ አጫሪ ጥቃቶች ምክንያት በትግራይ፣ አማራ
እና ክልሎች መጠነ ሰፊ የሰብዓዊ ቀውስ እንዲከሰት አድርጓል። የቡድኑ
ተከታታይ ሽብር ጥቃቶች ከ300 ሺ በላይ ወገኖቻችንን አፈናቅሏል፤ እና በርካታ
ንፁሃን ዜጎቻችንን ለሞት ዳርጓል። ከ100 ሚሊዮን በላይ ሕዝብ ባላት ሀገራችን
ላይ የምዕራቡ ዓለም የሚዲያ ተቋማት የከፈቱት የተቀናጀ ኢ-ፍትሃዊ፣ የተዛባ
እና ሀሰተኛ ዘገባ መንሰራፋትም በሃቅ ላይ በተመሰረተ አዘጋገብ ይህንን አስቸጋሪ
ሁኔታ ከማሻሻል ይልቅ በሀሰተኛ ዜናዎች እንዲደፈቅ አድርጎታል።
ሀገራችን ከላይ የተጠቁሰት ፈተናዎች ያጋጥሟት እንጂ ወቅቱን የተሻገረችው
በፖለቲካ፣ ኢኮኖሚ፣ በፍትህ ስርዓት እና ወታደራዊ ማሻሻያዎች እና ለቀጠናዊ
የመሠረተ ልማት እና ኢኮኖሚያዊ ውህደት ፕሮጀክቶች ከጎረቤታችን ኬንያ ጋር
በመተባበር ላይ ጉልህ ውጤቶችን በማስመዝገብ ነው።በዚህ ረገድም የሀገራችን
ተስፋ ሰጪ ጉዞ በዕድሳት፣ በአይበገሬነት፣ በተስፋ እና በብልፅግና የተቃኘ
ነበር።ይህንን ከግምት በማስገባትም መጪው 2014 የኢትዮጵያ አዲስ ዓመት

The history of LAPSSET Corridor Project
goes back to March 2012. It was on 02
March 2012 that former Prime Minister of
Ethiopia, the late Meles Zenawi, the then
President of Kenya, Mwai Kibaki and South
Sudan’s President, Salva Kiir Mayardit,
jointly inaugurated this pivotal project of
regional economic integration.
During a two-day state visit to the Republic
of Kenya in December 2020, Prime Minister
Dr. Abiy Ahmed together with Kenyan
President Uhuru Kenyatta inspected the
ongoing construction of the new Lamu Port,
an economic anchor project for the LAPSSET
designed to integrate roads, railways in
Ethiopia, Kenya and South Sudan. On the
occasion, PM Dr. Abiy reassured President
Kenyatta of Ethiopia’s unflinching
commitment to the realization of this flagship
project and increasing trade between the
two countries. He said, “Ethiopian
government has committed to ensure Kenya
is supplied with adequate electricity from

Ethiopia as a means for us to commit to the
Project.” He added, we are also doing our
road networks to ensure there is seamless
connectivity to boost intra-trade in the
region.
Ethiopian Ambassador to Kenya, Meles
Alem, who visited the LAPSSET Corridor

a telephone interview with The Star
newspaper noted, “Ethiopia is a very big
country. This is something people should
understand. There is no question about the
feasibility of the LAPSSET. Ethiopia needs
many ports” He underscored the fact that
Ethiopia, Kenya and South Sudan co-own
the project, not for media consumption or to
just please the Kenyan public or government
but the mutual advantage the people of
these respective States. He reaffirmed
Ethiopia’s keenness to the
operationalization of the Lamu Port and the
opening of the LAPSSET Corridor, which is
expected to deepen trade and economic ties
between the two countries and heighten the
“traditional” ties between Ethiopia and
Kenya.

The Moyale One-Stop-Border Post (OSBP)
The Moyale OSBP, another key milestone in
further consolidating the multifaceted
bilateral ties between Ethiopia and Kenya. It
was launched on 09 December 2020,
during Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s two-
day state visit to Kenya, along with Kenyan
President Uhuru Kenyatta. During the
inauguration ceremony, PM Abiy and
President Kenyatta committed to boosting
trade between Ethiopia and Kenya by
reducing trade barriers and jointly funding
projects, and to allocate more resources for
infrastructure projects to ensure the seamless
flow of people and commodities between
the two contiguous countries. Taking into
account the fact that it stretches for over
830km, the Moyale OSBP is a significant
cross border trading hotspot between
Ethiopia and Kenya. At the inauguration,

PM Abiy told President Kenyatta, the new
Moyale OSBP will help further expedite the
movement of people and goods across the
common border areas, which will in turn
boost tourism. President Kenyatta, on the
other hand noted, with the completion of the
Moyale border post, the two countries have
demonstrated the political goodwill to
address the challenges and impediments
facing businesses from both sides. He said,
in addition to facilitating cross-border trade
between the two countries, the border post
will also enhance mutual interactions among
our people and create synergy and unity of
purpose.

“Dubai of Africa” while ensuring the
communities along the common borders
Safaricom’s Entry into Ethiopia
The Ministry of Finance of Ethiopia awarded
of a telecom service license – a bid worth
USD 850 million offer - to the Global
Consortium for Ethiopia, a conglomerate of
telecom service providers that includes
Vodafone, Safaricom, Sumitomo
Corporation and the CDC Group in May this
year. Accordingly, the Council of Ministers
unanimously decided to expedite tasks that
would enable the issuance of the second
telecom license through the Ethiopian
Communication Authority (ECA). As a result,
Safaricom, Kenya-based telecom service
provider has been granted entry into the
biggest market in the East African region
that is Ethiopia. Safaricom, through its
Ethiopian outlet, can now tap into the
lucrative Ethiopian market with untapped
potential for growth. It is expected

benefit from the enhanced trade and
economic relations and improved peace

Safaricom’s entry into Ethiopia will
significantly contributed the estimated 1.1

opportunity to work with the people of
Ethiopia to set up telecom networks to a

Apart from generating massive economic
dividends in the Ethiopian market

competitive private sector engagement in
the digital economy as clearly stipulated in

the Digital Ethiopia 2025 Strategy. In other
words, by leveraging the digital platforms
and opportunities introduced by Safaricom,
the Government of Ethiopia will be able to
build a robust digital infrastructure that
encompasses connectivity, administering
power grids, e-governance, digital ID and
cybersecurity while enhancing the
accessibility, affordability and quality of
basic services offered by both public and
private institutions, either unilaterally or in
partnership. In short, by leveraging the
digital infrastructure effected by the Global
Consortium for Ethiopia, to which Safaricom
is a party, the Ethiopian government be able
to realize the country’s digital potential and
technological capabilities to build a tech and
innovation driven political economy, as per
the stipulations in the aforementioned
Strategy.

As such, it is incumbent upon the current
crop of leadership both in Addis Abeba and
Nairobi to capitalize on further
consolidating economic ties that would bring

this is through leveraging the dividends
generated by participatory flagship projects
such as the LAPSSET, the Moyale OSBP and
the disruptive innovative potential of
companies such as Safaricom PLC. •

Prospects

In a world driven and constantly disrupted

by fast economic growth, globalization and
digital innovation, diversified yet
synchronized economic cooperation would
gradually lead to a mutually beneficial
development and prosperity with a spill over
effect on the entire East African region.
Capitalizing on the above three key
milestones will complement the strong
traditional ties between Ethiopia and Kenya
while helping them achieve regional
economic integration. Forging such trade
and investment partnerships, through the
creation of jobs for youth, will also improve

generating up to 6.4 Giga watts of
electricity after the completion, he asserted
that Ethiopia hopes that the additional
electricity capacity will help to spur further
economic development and allow it to
export more to neighbouring countries to
increase its foreign exchange earnings.
Important issue should be clear to the
people of Sudan and Egypt and the whole
world as well is there is a grave shortage of
electricity generated so far in Ethiopia in
which about 60 percent of its population is
coerced to live in darkness.
That shortage is partly caused by a reliance
on hydroelectricity, a lack of diversification
that Addis Ababa would like to address in
the future. For now, however, it is more
focused on harnessing the untapped power
of the Nile, which it has historically been
abandoned from doing, Ermias added.
On top of generating hydropower, GERD is
an integral part of the Ethiopian economic
and political development strategy. Apart
from giving light for the rural people, the
dam is hoped to provide much needed
electricity for industrial development and
give the country greater control over the
flow of the Nile.
Explaining electricity export is the current
strategic objective of Ethiopia, he asserted
that the country can generate hard currency
very soon in exporting energy to the
countries in the region. After GERD’s

completion, Ethiopia will become the second
in largest producer of electricity in sub-
Saharan Africa next to South Africa.
Thereupon, it will bring tangible and
sustainable economic growth to Ethiopia
of and the East African countries as well.
If the amount of the power capacity that
might be produced from the dam can
address and cover the electricity demand of
industries coupled with the households, it
will be possible to increase production
capacity of the industries in addition to
substituting import items.
Ermias also illustrated that Bahir Dar
Industry Park is operating in only three shifts
due to lack of electricity. Cognizant of this,
it is not producing goods that are compatible
with its potential. Subsequently, the power
generation will cause to cancel the shifting
system and help the industries to operate
24/7 with their full capacity, he said.
Moreover, it will also reduce deforestation if
the dam starts its full operation of generating
power. Knowingly, many of Ethiopians
particularly people who are living at the
rural areas of the country are using charcoal
or wood for their daily cooking and heat
energy. Therefore, the power generation
will also curb the deforestation which has
direct impact on the global climate change,
he noted.

CONSULTATIVE MEETING CONVENES IN NAIROBI
African Union Mission in Somalia
(AMISOM) Troop Contributing Countries
(TCCs) held an informal consultative meeting
addressing the Mission’s Post-2021
Engagement with Somalia from 10th -11th of
July, 2021, in Nairobi. H.E Ambassador
Macharia Kamau, Principal Secretary of the
Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kenya,
presided over the opening session of the
meeting. The meeting was chaired by
Ambassador George Orina, Director for
Africa and the African Union at the Ministry
of Foreign Affairs of Kenya. The Ethiopian
delegation led by H.E Ambassador Meles
Alem, Ambassador of Ethiopia to Kenya,
and three staffs from the Embassy attended
the meeting. Delegations from other
members of the TCC, comprising of civil and
political experts, including Burundi, Uganda
and Djibouti also attended the meeting.

The informal consultative meeting reviewed
the report produced by the African Union
Independent Assessment (AU-IA) Team and
indicated the way forward regarding AU’s
Post-2021 engagement with Somalia. The
meeting endorsed the deployment of AU-UN
Multidimensional Stabilization Mission in
Somalia, which was presented as option
number one in the foregoing report by
rectifying its shortcomings. It was observed
that exiting from Somalia by the end of the
2021, which was presented as one of the
options in the report, is untenable in the
wake of mounting attacks by Al-Shabaab
and other militant groups in Somalia.
The TCC delegations stressed that AMISOM
should be consolidated and financially well-
resourced to avert the risk and security
challenges posed by Al-Shabaab in Somalia
and beyond. The consultative meeting
concluded that the current troop contributing

ETHIOPIAN TRADITIONAL COFFEE CEREMONY
The birthplace of coffee celebrates community with a sensory feast.
We tend to think of tea as the hot drink to
linger over, while coffee is something to
throw back groggily at the beginning of the
day. But in Ethiopia, coffee is
centerpiece of an elegant ceremony meant
to be shared with family and guests over
several hours.
Coffee originated in Ethiopia, with popular
lore pointing to a goatherd who saw his
flock frolicking after eating raw coffee
berries. The coffee ceremony also starts
with raw coffee beans, which are washed
and then cooked over a fire or stove. In
some Ethiopian households, the coffee
ceremony is conducted three times per day
by a female member of the family. She
typically begins by spreading fresh flowers
and grass on the floor or ground, while
burning incense (frankincense, myrrh, and
sandalwood are popular options) to make
the air even more fragrant. Then, she
roasts the coffee beans in a long-handled

pan until they’re black and oily, and invites
guests to come closer and savor the smell.
The hostess then grinds the coffee with a
mortar and pestle, and adds it to water
that’s boiling in a coffeepot called a
jebena. When it’s finished boiling, she
holds the jebena high in the air and pours
the coffee into small cups (a high, gentle
pour traps most of the grounds in the
bottom of the jebena). Pouring neatly takes
skill and grace. Often, each cup is served
with a heaping spoonful of sugar and a
snack of fresh popcorn. Guests typically
the drink three rounds of coffee, using the
same grounds. The third cup is said to
convey a blessing.
Sharing delicious, laboriously prepared
coffee serves as an opportunity to catch up
with friends and entertain guests. The
dreamy smell of incense and coffee, along
with the buzz of caffeine and conversation,
makes everyone more likely to linger.

Coffee ceremonies are a regular social
occurrence in Ethiopia, and these days
most cafes also provide the experience.

የሚኖሩ የዳያስፖራ አባላት የህዳሴ ቦንድ በመግዛት ቃል የቦንድ ግዥ እንደሚፈፅሙ እና ለሀገር

እና ሀገራዊ ጉዳዮች የነበራቸውን አስተዋፅኦ መከላከያ ሠራዊት አስፈላጊውን ድጋፍ ሁሉ

እውቅና የተሰጠ ሲሆን የዳያስፖራ አባላቱ 135 እንደሚያደርጉ ገልፀዋል።

ሺህ ዶላር ግዥ መፈፀማቸውን፣በኮሮና ለተጎዱ ይህ የዳያስፖራ ማህበር እንደ ሰው የዜጎች ጥላ

ወገኖች 60ሺህ ዶላር ድጋፍ ያደረጉ መሆኑን፣ እንዲሆን የሚጠበቅበት ነው። ረዥሙን ጉዞ
ገበታ ለሀገር፣ የትግራይ ክልል ህግ ማስከበርን
ጀምሮታል።•
በሚመለከት ከመንግስት ጎን በመቆም ላሳዩት
ከፍተኛ ድጋፍ ክቡር አምባሳደሩ ምስጋና
አቅርበዋል።
