Q1-A\ A room (7m×4m×3m) is occupied by a moist air at 38°C. The atmospheric pressure is
100kPa and the relative humidity is 70%. Without using the Psychrometric Chart, determine the
specific humidity, dew point, mass of dry air, and mass of water vapour. If this air is cooled at
constant pressure and relative humidity until the temperature becomes 10°C, find the amount of
water vapour condensed. [10 Marks]
Q1-B\ In winter, the indoor conditions of a study zone are maintained at 25°C DBT and 35% RH
by means of a central heating system. If the air inside the zone is considered still, determine the
percent of people feeling comfortable. Then, if internal fans are used to move the indoor air, and
hence improve the human comfort, determine the air velocity required to achieve the best
percentage of comfort in the zone. [10 Marks]
Q2\ An air-conditioned room is to be maintained at 27°C DBT and 60% RH, while the ambient
conditions are 40°C DBT and 30°C WBT. The total sensible heat load is 108,000 kJ/h while the
total latent heat load is 36,000 kJ/h. On mass basis, 40% fresh air is passed first over a cooling coil,
and then, mixed with 60% recirculated air from the conditioned zone. If the air leaves the cooling
coil at 18°C, determine: 1) the condition of air entering the room, 2) the amount of make-up air, 3)
the cooling coil capacity, 4) the apparatus dew point, and 5) the by-pass factor of the cooling coil.
[20 Marks]
Q3\ A (20m×50m×10m) theater auditorium located at 40°N latitude in an area with a design dry-
bulb temperature and relative humidity of 45ºC and 30%, respectively, while the inside design dry-
bulb temperature and relative humidity are 25.5ºC and 50%, respectively. The heat gains from the
walls and roof are marginal and can be ignored. Consider that the theater runs daily from 11:00AM
to 11:00PM, determine the cooling loads due to heat gains at 3:00PM and 9:00PM. [20 Marks]
Q4\ A vapour-compression plant using R-12 operates between 35°C condensing temperature and -
5°C evaporation temperature with saturated vapour leaving the evaporator. The plant consist of
twin cylinder, single acting compressor having 100mm diameter and 120mm stroke running at
300rpm. If the compressor has a volumetric efficiency of 85% and its mechanical efficiency is
90%, determine the COP, Power required, and Tonnage capacity of the plant. [20 Marks]
Q5\ The following duct system is composed of square cross-sectioned ducts. If the velocity in the
main duct is to be 7 m/s and it should not be higher than 6 m/s in the remaining branches, size the
air ducting system using the VELOCITY REDUCTION METHOD. Considering that the radius of each
elbow in the system is 500mm, determine the amount of flow resistance to be added to branch C
in order to balance the system. Then, determine the electric power required by the fan to deliver
the desired airflow rate if the efficiency of the fan used is 70%. [20 Marks]
