DETERMINATION OF TOTAL FATTY MATTER OF SOAPS

PROCEDURE:

1. Take 10grams of soap sample in 500ml conical flask.

2. Add 400ml of distilled water and heat while stirring until it dissolved.

3. Add 1ml methyl orange indicator.

4. Add 50% HCL solution slowly so that the solution changes to a pink colour.

5. Let it boil until the oil is melted and cool.

6. Transfer to 500ml separating funnel.

7. Add 50ml petroleum ether , shake gently and leave for a while (1)

8. Remove the solution below(pink) into a conical flask (2)

9. Weigh a 250ml beaker with anti-bumping. Remove the petroleum ether solution

into a plastic beaker containing sodium sulphate and pour into the 250ml beaker

weighed above.

10. Repeat steps 1, 2 and 3 as much as 3 times.

11. Dry the petroleum ether on a hot plate slowly and place it the oven for 1hour. cool

12. Weigh the beaker containing the oil (B)

TFM= B-S*100/Sample weight

B= heavy beaker + ant bumping + oil

S = Heavy beaker + anti bumping
