Wish + (that) + past simple
We also use 'wish' with 'could' to talk about
Wish + past simple is used to express that we want a things in the present or future that we would
situation in the present (or future) to be different. like to be different. In this situation, 'could' is
the past simple of 'can'.
 I wish I spoke Italian. (I don’t speak Italian)
 I wish I had a big car. (I don’t have a big car)  I wish that I could speak Spanish (but,
 I wish I were on a beach. (I’m in the office) unfortunately, I can't speak Spanish).
 I wish it were the weekend. (It’s only Wednesday)  I wish that I could drive (I can't drive).
 I wish that we could go to the party tonight
(unfortunately, we're busy so we can't go).

I have done (do) lots of horrible jobs in my life, but the worst job I have ever
had(ever have) was selling hotdogs. I have always been (always be) a
