Understanding
Capacity Building

Definitions

Capacity is defined as the ability of individuals, organizations, and


societies to perform functions, solve problems, and set and achieve
objectives in a sustainable manner.

Capacity is simply the ways and means needed to do what has to be done.

Components of capacity include skills, knowledge, resources, motivation,


willingness, proactive initiatives.
• Capacity Building is the process through which the abilities are
obtained, strengthened, adapted and maintained over time.

• It is the ability of individuals, organisations and societies to


perform functions, solve problems, and set and achieve
objectives in a sustainable manner.

• Capacity Building is a means towards reaching development


outcomes.
Levels of Capacity Building

National: Civic engagement across different parts of society.

Sectoral: Increased coordination among institutional actors

Organizational: Enables the coming together of individual capacities to achieve goals.

Individual
Skills, experience and knowledge that are vested in people. Each person is endowed
with a mix of capacities that allows them to perform, whether at home, at work or in
society at large.
• At the individual level, how we get from where we are to where we need
to be is principally through CAPACITY BUILDING.

• Therefore, at the individual level, capacity building refers to the


strategies, methods or approaches that individuals adopt to achieve their
desired development objectives.

• CAPACITY BUILDING IS ABOUT BUILDING YOURSELF FOR

Capacity Building
is about developing to the fullest potential.
It requires a mix of Qualities and Mindsets.

building your capacity. Without a
positive attitude you cannot achieve
anything of importance in life.

Capacity Building is about continuous growth.

We can’t Grow if We do not Learn Continuously.
