Map Skills
In this section of Beginning Geography, students learn basic map skills.
The map skills are based on the following National Geography Standards:

Essential Element 1: The World in Spatial Terms

Standard 1: How to use maps and other geographic
representations, tools, and technologies to
acquire, process, and report information
from a spatial perspective.

Reproducible Activity Pages

There are 31 activity pages that cover 9 map skills. The facing page provides a detailed
table of contents for the Map Skills section. The activity pages vary in difficulty, allowing
you to match them to students’ learning levels.

NOTE: The activity pages are intended for direct instruction with the whole class
or small groups. Read the statement of the concept being presented and the activity
directions to the students. For students at lower reading levels, it is recommended that
you also read the activity items together.

Assessments
Three map skills reviews (pages 35−37) follow the skill activity pages. These pages
may be used as a review or as a formal assessment of students’ skill acquisition. The
review pages vary in difficulty. Choose one or more that are appropriate to your
students’ needs.

Landforms and Bodies of Water
In this section of Beginning Geography, students learn basic landforms and bodies
of water. This study is based on the following National Geography Standards:

Essential Element 2: Places and Regions

Standard 4: The physical and human characteristics of places.

Essential Element 3: Physical Systems

Standard 7: The physical process that shapes the patterns of Earth’s surface.
Standard 8: The characteristics and spatial distribution of ecosystems
on Earth’s surface.

Reproducible Activity Pages

There are 29 activity pages that present eight landforms and three bodies of water.
The facing page provides a detailed table of contents for the Landforms and Bodies of Water
section. The activity pages vary in difficulty, allowing you to match them to students’
learning levels.

NOTE: The activity pages are intended for direct instruction of the whole class or small
groups. Read the statement of the concept being presented and the activity directions to
the students. For students at lower reading levels, it is recommended that you also read
the activity items together.

Assessments
Three map skills reviews (pages 69−71) follow the skill activity pages. These pages may
be used as a review or as a formal assessment of students’ skill acquisition. The review
pages vary in difficulty. Choose one or more that are appropriate to your students’ needs.

Around the World with Animals
This final section of Beginning Geography focuses on the variety of animal
life around the world. There is a world map, followed by a map of each
continent that shows examples of the animal life found in various regions
of that continent.

How to Use
You may use these maps in a number of ways:
• in conjunction with the study of each continent in Section 3—learning
where interesting animals are found can help to engage students and enrich
your geography studies,
• as a reference in science studies on biodiversity and ecosystems, and
• as a springboard to nonfiction reading and writing on animal life.
