Let’s Meet Ali!

Ali is a doctor. He looks after sick people. He usually gets up at 6.00 o’clock. Today he is
late, it is 7.30 and he is still in bed. He usually goes to work by bus but today he is driving to
work. He arrives at work at 8.00 every morning but it is 8.30 now and he is still driving. It’s
12.00 o’clock now. He always has his lunch at 12.00 but today he isn’t having lunch at 12.00,
he is looking after his sick patients. It is half past seven now, Ali is watching TV. He usually
watches TV at half past seven because his favourite programme starts at half past seven. Ali
has his dinner at 8.30 every day and he is having dinner now. It is 11.00 now Ali is going to
bed. He always goes to bed at 11.00.
1. What does Ali do?
2. What time does he usually get up?
3. How does he usually go to work?
4. What time does he arrive at work every day?
5. Why does he usually watch TV at 7.30?
6. What time does he go to bed?

Present Simple Tense

For Positive Sentences

 A simple present tense has always one main verb. The first form of the verb is used.
 With 1st person singular and plural (I, we), second person (you) and third person
plural (they), the main verb will remain the same. For example,
I work at Interwood as an intern.
We evaluate things on the basis of logic.
You travel to far-away places daily.
They provide a relaxed atmosphere to their students.
However, with third person singular (he, she, it and any single name), the end of the
verb will always have ‘-s’ or ‘-es’. For example
He argues a lot.
She gets excited to meet his cousins in vacations.
It roars.
Ali/ Saima/ Kashif wants to excel in English.
 There is important to keep one thing in mind that in English, it is called ‘a tense of
habit’. It means that these sentences show habit. So, at the end of the sentence, wo use
the ‘adverb of time’ “EVERY”. For example, every day, every morning, every year,
every night, etc.
 Also, ‘adverb of time’ and main verb must go together. It means ‘adverb of time’
should correspond with the verb.
For example,
I speak English yesterday.
I speak English tomorrow.
I speak English now.
All these sentences are wrong because ‘speak’ show a habit and the adverbs aren’t
corresponding with the verb. So, the true sentence will be,
I speak English usually.

For Negative Sentences

 Let’s take the first case having main verb’s first form with no ‘-s’ or ‘-es’. To make
negative of these sentences, we use ‘not’ along with the helping verb ‘do’. For
example
I do not work at Interwood……
We do no evaluate things……
 To make negative of second case of sentences, use ‘does not’. After using ‘does not’,
the ‘-s’ or ‘-es’ of main verb will be removed. For example
He does not argue a lot.
Ali does not want to excel in English.

For Interrogative

 To make the question of both cases, bring the helping verbs at beginning and the rest
of the sentence will remain same. For example
Do I work at Interwood as an intern?
Does he want to excel in English?
