Summary

Teaching and assessment are inter-dependent and cyclical processes. A teacher bases

her/his planning of the learning/teaching process on the formative assessment of each child

and sets high expectations for the children which allows them to develop the ability to self-

assess and set learning goals for themselves. A teacher should have a thorough knowledge of

the structure and content of the official curriculum and the learning outcomes set for a given

age and must be able to adjust the learning/teaching process to the needs and capabilities of

each child, thus ensuring their growth and development.

A teacher should know and use various teaching methods and strategies that enable

children to be involved actively in the learning process, to explore, experiment and reach

their own understanding of the learned material through social interaction and the use of

different knowledge sources. Through planning an integrated curriculum using a

multidisciplinary perspective, a teacher should ensure meaningful learning and application of

the learned material. In addition, a teacher should encourage the children’s independence in

learning.
Critic (Agree/Disagree)

I agree to the author’s idea on teaching and assessment. The teacher should have

knowledge and understanding of subject matter, curriculum logic and relationship between its

component, ideas and methods of effective teaching, lesson designs and learning sequence,

monitoring and assessment strategies, and the significance of multidisciplinary approaches

and integrated teaching. Through this knowledge and understanding, the teacher then will be

able to teach effectively and efficiently, will be able to teach by the process of student-

centered approach, and also will be able to identify student’s potential and strengths and

build on them.

The teachers professional knowledge, skills and values indicators that was written by

the author give guidance for the future teachers on how to efficiently teach their students to

cope with the current innovations , current curriculum and to meet the new international

standards of teaching.

A 21st century professional teacher must be a learner-centered classroom. Doing so

could increase inherent motivation for better learning outcome as no one-size-fits-all. For

instance, different students have different needs when it comes to help with new vocabulary

or comprehension so there’s no need to go into detail something that perhaps only one or two

students will benefit from. Instead, teaching students to be independent and know how to find

the answers they need makes the class a different environment. Apart from that, technology

keeps developing; ergo students must view their smart phones as useful tools that support

knowledge rather than a detraction.

Insights/Opinion

Teaching in the 21st Century. Traditional teaching and learning are changing to keep

up with the developments and changes with digital technologies andexpanding online

learning environments. Students today are faced with a differentiated set of skills, attitudes

and actions that they will need in order for them to be prepared for, be successful in and meet

the challenges of a digital economy. The author must highlight the need of teachers to be

equipped with the right knowledge in the subject that they are teaching. Also, motivate

teachers to catch up with the trend nowadays.

To be an effective teacher in the 21st century, teachers need to be able to engage and

interact with a wide variety of information from an ever-increasing range of sources. The

author must have said about teachers should not just be masters of their profession; they also

must be the artist of it. But what is the difference between a master and an artist? How can a

teacher be both? What are the characteristic features of god or bad teachers/teaching? This is

an evergreen question which often cannot be answered without understanding the real

contexts of teaching in the 21st Century.

The author must also state aboutteachers need to be equipped with ever-increasing

skills and competencies to manage this hyper-connected, knowledge environment in order to

best prepare students for the 21st Century, a world where the only constant they know is

change. Also, he must have given a detailed example about how to attain such objective, skill

and professionalism in the field of education. The whole context has tackled general aspect of

teaching and assessment which is also good. It is just a little vague for first time readers like

us since it is narrated in a broader sense.
