heritage.
GYEONGJU –경주시
Known as the ‘Museum without Walls’, this Korean city was the former
capital of the Silla Kingdom, which ruled Korea from the 7th to the 9th
centuries.
A unique fortress city situated on Namhansan (Namhan Mountain) 500m above sea level and 25km southeast of Seoul.
Namhansanseong was designated as a Provincial Park on 17 March 1971 and UNESCO World Heritage in June 2014.
There are two types of azaleas, but they both translate the same. There
are the ones called 진달래 (jindalrae) and the ones called 철쭉 (cheoljjuk),
and both are a purple-pink color. Sometimes cheoljjuk translates to “Royal
azalea.”
From mid-March to mid-April, while the air is still cold and most of
nature still dead, these pretty, ethereal blossoms, known as 벚꽃
(bot–ggot) signal an end to Korea’s bitter winter.
The cherry blossom is usually associated with Japan, where it is
known as sakura. This is in part because the cherry blossom is the
natural flower of Japan. In Korea, it is called beot-kkot (벗꽃). It's a
common Korean word around this time of year.
The most well-known cherry blossom festival in Seoul is the Yeouido Cherry
Blossom Festival (also known as Yeongdeungpo Yeouido Spring Flower
Festival). It is famous for its 1,886 Korean Cherry trees along the 1.7km
Yeouiseo-ro that begin to fully bloom in early to mid-April.
