Introduction: In todays’ world that we are living, the area of mathematics has and becoming
more and more demanding in our society, where both private and public sectors are hiring those
who have a strong background in mathematics. Mathematics as a subject helps one to be very
analytic, logical, and conceptual incline which allows one to develop problem solving skills to
make a difference in our nation and the world.

Rationale: This unit will help students focus attention on the use of mathematics as a form of
communication. Students will use set notation, written English and Venn Diagrams to describe
sets, subsets and relationship among them. Students will use set concepts to solved worded
problems. Students will develop self-confidence while implementing various techniques and
apply knowledge to real life solutions.

Unit Goals:
1. To help students appreciate the use of mathematics as a form of communication.
2. To make mathematics relevant to the interest and experiences of students by helping
them to recognize mathematics in their environment.
3. To develop the ability to apply mathematical knowledge to the solution of problems
which are meaningful to students as citizens.
4. To help students cultivate the ability to think logically and critically.
5. To prepare students for the use of mathematics in further studies.
6. To help students develop positive attitudes, such as open mindedness, self-reliance,
persistence and spirit of enquiry.
