1. Why is prompt transport of a stroke pt critical?

The reason prompt transport is critical is because some of the treatment options available at

hospitals; such as, thrombolytic therapy and procedures to mechanically remove the blood clot

need to be initiated within 3 hours (drugs) or 6 hours (mechanical method) of onset of symptoms.

So, it is imperative to transport as quickly and safely as possible in order to maximize the

possibility of recovery.

2. What is the difference between a simple partial & complex partial seizure?

Simple partial seizure: Focal Onset aware seizure

 starts in one area of brain

 pt remains alert & able to interact/ no change to loc

 seizure is brief, can last from seconds to less than 2 mins.

Complex partial seizure: Focal onset impaired awareness seizure

 starts in one hemisphere of the brain

 pt is not aware of their surroundings during seizure/ altered loc

 can last 1 to 2 minutes

 aura noted (experience a warning sense prior to event)

 can have automatisms: lip-smacking, picking at clothes, fumbling

 pt may experience unpleasant smells & visual hallucinations


3. List 3 conditions that may simulate stroke

1. Hypoglycemia
2. postictal state
3. subdural or epidural bleeding
4. HA, vomiting, altered mental status & seizures are all considered early signs of?
