SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL CORE SUBJECT

EARTH AND LIFE SCIENCES

Grade 11

CONTENT Natural Hazards, Mitigation and Adaptation: Geologic Processes and Hazards

CONTENT STANDARDS The learners demonstrate an understanding of the different hazards caused by geological
processes (earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and landslides). The learners shall be able to
conduct a survey to assess the possible geologic hazards that your community may
experience.
PERFORMANCE STANDARDS The learners shall be able to conduct a survey to assess the possible geologic / hydro
meteorological hazards that your community may experience.

MOST ESSENTIAL At the end of the lesson, the learners …

LEARNING COMPETENCIES 1. Describe the various hazards that may happen in the event of earthquakes, volcanic
eruptions, and landslides.

LESSON OUTLINE:

1. Introduction
2. Motivation – Structural Map of the Philippines
3. Instruction – Earthquake Hazards
4. Enrichment – Campaign Material

PROCEDURE MEETING THE LEARNERS’ NEEDS

INTRODUCTION:

1. Introduce the following learning objectives:

a. Describe the various hazards that may happen in the event of earthquakes, volcanic
eruptions, and landslides.

2. Review
a. What are tectonic plates and the concept of plate tectonics?
b. What are the relationships of plate tectonics and faults with earthquakes

3. Introduce the following terms:

a. Natural hazards
b. Risk
c. Vulnerability

MOTIVATION: Teachers Tip:

Make sure to differentiate between magma
1. Locate possible places where earthquakes are most likely to happen using the structural map and lava.
of the Philippines.
Remind the learners of the internal structure
2. Show a video about a recent earthquake in the Philippines. of the Earth. Temperature increases with
depth. Shouldn't all of the Earth's interior be
molten?
INSTRUCTION:

1. Identifying earthquake hazards (video clip review)

a. Ask the learners carefully to view the video and identify as many hazards, observed in the clip.

b. List the corresponding effect of these hazards to the area, people and infrastructure.

2. Reflection paper of what they identified in the video.

3. Synthesize the hazards presented in the video clip.

ENRICHMENT:

1. Come up with a campaign material for the students of the school. The campaign material
must:
a. contain information on the potential danger of earthquake hazards within the school;
b. must be in a PowerPoint presentation;

2. Identify the grade level you aim to inform with the potential risks of earthquake and what
must you do to minimize the damage.
